Fal GruntMike,
My compliments to you and Mr.Wiebe, a great looking rifle.
Would you mind detailing a few of the particulars? Looks like EAW mounts? What shroud was used? Trigger?
Beautiful work!

I buy Mauser actions, parts, micrometers, tools, calipers, etc. Specifically looking for pre-WWII Mauser tools.
Mike,
It is wonderful to see a dream become reality, and Mr. Wiebe is oh so good at doing just that.
Take it hunting once and I would bet you will have a hard time not taking it everytime.
If you are running out of room with this recent addition, I would be willing to provide a roof for the H&H No.2 and swear to only shoot it only on bright and clear Sundays.
Many Thanks
Brett

AntlersOh my! That's beautiful, Mike. Now it needs some of the blueing near the end of the barrel worn down to a silver patina.

boom stickQuestions
What is the max oal that action can take?
How strong are those actions?
Any special treatments to strengthen the action?
thanks
29 April 2012, 17:28
MJinesThanks for the kind words. I will defer to Duane on most of the questions. There is no heat treating of the action. Yes, the mounts are EAW Quick Loc.

Duane WiebeOK...Shroud is a La Pour..Trigger is a Timney w/reshaped lever (more like a shotgun trigger)..404/375 same OAL length..Historically, a defensible maximum....I'm not a fan of automaically re heat treating, deep carburizing on locking recess' would be compromised PLEASE....MY OPINION ONLY..DON'T WANT ANOTHER ENDLESS DEBATE.
For what it's worth, a 404 I built on a 1909 went to France. had to be proofed before it could be registered. Certificate says proofed at 4560 BAR....not re heat treated. Conversiion 4560 BAR equuals 66137 PSI

Tsquare2Mike, Roger & Duane,
A wonderful example of the gunmaker's art. Just spectacular. Roger, the amount, style, and execution of the engraving is, for my taste anyway, just about as close to perfect for a hunting rifle as one is apt to ever find. Congratulation to all for a superb rifle.

MJinesTom, little do you know that you played a role in this rifle as well. I got the idea for the EAW Quick Loc mounts from your book, pp. 63-65. Thanks for the inspiration.

GrenadierVery nice lines. The touch of engraving is very pleasing and the stippling looks top notch. I especially like the front sight hood. So, how's it shooting?

bwanamrmBeautiful rifle Mike... absolutely beautiful!
On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Life grows grim without senseless indulgence.
Shoots as good as it looks. Green target is Barnes solids at 25 yards off of sticks, three shots. Black target is Barnes TSX at 100 yards. The high shot on the black target was me pulling the shot. Both loads were 73 grains of RL15 with velocities kicking around 2200 fps. Rifle is prettier in person. The pictures wash out the stock finish. It is a deeper color in person with nice mineral streaking. Very trim feel and handles extremely well.

MJinesNot sure about the weight. The rifle certainly feels light in the hands. My guess is that it is around 9.5 pounds without the scope. The finish is rust blue. I have shot it a number of times since those targets were posted. It will shoot MOA with Hornady ammo at 100 yards. Have not played with reloading for it to any appreciable degree.
