Is there a scope mount base that can be mounted on the left side of the Turk by drilling and tapping that puts the scope over the bore? I will be bending the bolt handle.

Any of the side mounts will work, but bolt clearance might depend on your bending/welding job and also how far back you mount the scope.

I’m just starting on two 1903 Turks myself, but haven’t decided if either of them will have a scope.

SS, why don't you go with a 'scout' type forward mount using the rear sight base and a longer eye relief scope?

You don't have to modify the bolt and can still use the military strippers.

That scout mount idea is a great one...and I also seem to recall someone who makes a cantilevered Mauser scope base that screws right into existing rear base.

Thanks guys, what I was thinking about was something sort of like an AK-47 side rail set-up made for the mauser. I don't know if anyone makes such a beast.

SS, I don't know of any 'side mount' for the Turk 03/38. But that doesn't mean they don't exist.

You might post this question in 'gunsmithing'. If such a mount exists, they would know about it.

The base plates on G&H side mounts come blank so they can be altered in height, width and contour to fit just about any receiver or hole placement.

The G&H mounts are a "tad pricey" for mounting on a Turk 03/38. Eeker

But that would be a side mount solution.

I just bought a Jaeger side mount from a guy on the forum for $75.00 bucks.

They’re not as nice, but the Weaver side mounts for a large ring Mauser are about $50.00 bucks brand new. B-Square makes a scout mount for Mausers for $70.00 bucks. Advanced Tech makes a no-drill no tap mount for $50.00 bucks.XS Sight Systems has a scout base for $65.00 bucks...I could go on, but I think you can see that finding either a scout or side mount for your rifle ain’t gonna pose many problems or break your bank account.

Other than the clip slot hump and the recessed front ring the Turk 03/38’s are the same as LR 98’s. If a mount will fit one it will fit the other. The Turk 03’s were made in Germany by the same factories that made all the “in-demand†Mausers so I’m not sure why they aren’t as good to build from as any of the other ones out there that cost far more. Instead of grinding off a crest from Argentina, Chile, or Peru, you grind off a Turkish crest...what’s the difference?

Thanks again guys.
I will look into the Weaver, you are right I don't want to put a lot into it and I am leaving it mostly military.

I have drilled and tapped dozens of Turkish Mausers.

I use a $40 Wheeler drill and tap fixture.

I drill and tap two 6-48 screw holes in the rear ring and two more in the front ring.

I put a #45 Weaver mount in the rear and a #46 Weaver mount in the front. These mounts are $2~$3 with screws in Alluminum and $6~$10 each in steel.

I can have a scope mounted on a Turk in less than 10 minutes.

If you want the bolt bent, my record for those is 12 minutes, but more likely 20 minutes plus set up time. I know someone who spends all day for one, as he bends and re bends to get it right. I don't have a welder, so for the ones with long bolt handles, I pay to have welded, $15 ~ $40.

If you want the rear hump cut off the rear ring, and done nicely, and re blued, [a good idea before drilling and tapping] that can be done quick and dirty on a grinder, but better done with a mill and then a file, and it takes 30 minutes.

This is a pic of a VZ24, but the bolt bending and the drill and tapping are the same. The hump to remove is much smaller than a 1903 Turk, but about the same as a 1938 K.Kale:
pic of drilled and tapped with Weaver 45 and 46 and hump ground off
The bent bolt is supposed to get shaped, but this on still has the hammer marks.

Not to impugn anyone...but I would like to see a picture of a finished/functioning bolt handle that was done in 12 minutes...and a scope, bases and rings that were completely (and properly) installed in less than 10 minutes. Eeker

DaMan,

Would you put a G&H mount on a Peruvian 1909?
