What say our friends from the Great White North? This was posted on our Anti-Wolf America page on facebook.

"This large (170 lbs.) wolf was shoot here in Alberta , Canada by a local rancher . He thought he was being stalked by a coyote while checking some cattle pens . He grab a rifle and went back and shoot it in the corrals . This is the 3rd wolf to be shoot and we have never had wolves in this area since the buffalo ran free . This is big open country . We are told they are a high-bred and no one has claimed to introduce wolves here."

DNA studies will tell you exactly what they are but 170 lbs is very big .NY and PA studies of coyotes show 20 % of them have wolf genes and those can get to 70 lbs or so .
Don't be too quick to believe the "we haven't introduced them' story ! They may also move long distance like the recent mountain lion that covered as much as 1500 miles !!

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Let's get real, guys. Big Grin Here's the original story, complete with audio.

Don't know how you get a giant wolf out of that. Just down the road from here about 60 miles. Nothing unusual about the size of the beast, just that it's about a hundred miles from "recognized" wolf habitat. Numbers are increasing and they are showing up in unlikely places. People claim to have seen them in Calgary and Edmonton. More of the bastards to shoot. Big Grin

That's some wolf alright, grew from 115 lbs in the original story to 170 lbs in this thread. One of those mysterious mutant wolves which continue to grow even when dead.

I am sure alot of you have seen a wolf in the summer. They are long, tall and lean. Their fur in the winter makes them look twice the size. I think a true 140lb wolf would be a whopper. After a good meal of perhaps 30 lbs of meat they make 170.
A beautiful male black wolf was shot by a hunter on a Griz hunt I was on in April (West central Alaska). It looked big on the ground and when the hunter lifting it like a leopard however when it was skinned, I would say it was probably 100lbs. Great hide though. The Taxidermist in town said it would fetch $400.00 if the hunter was willing to sell it. Great trophy!

There was also a large black colored wolf shot in 2010 by Cabri, Saskatchewan, Canada. Very similar country to where this one was shot, but 200 miles east. Here is link to news story...Sorry couldn't find the picture again..

Reported sightings increase in the prairie country every year in Alberta....I hope one comes to a coyote call one day.....

I haven't seen the display recently, but I think the "about 200 lb" weight is by Alaska bar standards, as in "I almost landed a king that had to be about 100 lb."

I see the odd wolf on the ground here in the Chilcotin. The largest wieghed wolf i have heard of is 125lbs and that is a whopper. Unlike a cougar they don't put on fat and have a very small muscles. Wolves are always on the move and don't have the luxury of laying around getting fat. I would have to see the scale myself to believe anything over 150.

I'm pretty sure that if you check with butchloc in a year or two his wolf will have been at least 400 pounds and probably have eaten most of Fairbanks and part of Anchorage.
