| I've driven from Baie Comeau (spelling?)east of Quebec City to Labrador City along highway 389. It will take you the better part of a long day to make the drive. There is a paved stretch that takes you up to Manicougan 5 (a big hydro dam) and then the road is all dirt. Most of it isn't too bad, but the last 50 or so miles before you reach Fermont, Quebec (about 20 miles south of Labrador City) wasn't the best. Still, it is a relatively easy drive that you can make in most vehicles (I had a front wheel drive Nissan - it was summer). P.S. Don't plan on stopping in Gagnon for gas or food- even though your map may show it, it doesn't exist aanymore- it was bulldozed under when the mine closed! |

| Jeff; Thanks for the info, and I have heard similiar things about the road to Labrador City and I think I will drive to Sept-Iles and take the longer train ride to Shefferville. It will take me around 30 hours to drive there(John; thats a long time even with out Mortie so he will not accompany me) I found an interesting site about the train if anyone is interested. http://www.photosbystevenjbrown.com/qnsl/qnsl.html |
