It is going to go down as a financial disaster and all most will remember will be the death of the young fellow in the luge.
They lied about the cost, we will be paying for this for a long time.

The Olympics is a con-game for the rich and powerful to keep the "serfs" quiescent and I was and am totally opposed to it here in Vancouver. It is a disaster and huge waste of tax monies we need for health care, education, environmental management and law enforcement as well as other social issues.

I hate the fucking Olympics and despise the slimey polticians involved, I think a majority of local people opposed it, but, hey, the "bought and paid for" media and their corporate bosses hyped it, so......

You know most of us are very proud of it and our canadian heritage-just listen to the poet. There are protesters to any big thing but they do not represent our Canadian patriotism.

What has Canadian patriotism to do with this foolish extravaganza, nothing that I can see.

They are closing schools in your region, have closed or seriously impaired hosptital emergency rooms, surgical suites and geriatric facilities all through the province and we should accept this and still pay BILLIONS for this nonsense?

Nope, this is just a con to make the wealthy even richer.

Dewey it is too bad that your attitude has blinded you to what was a great opening ceremony as well as a patriotic Canadian event. As for the closing of schools( an approprate response to declining enrolement) and health care noise( please look at the ever increasing budget in that area)then realize that the dream of free health care simply will not stand the coming demographic swell of baby boomers and we must change the system. In the interm try to enjoy life.

I didn't mention ...free... ANYTHING, I am married to a longterm health care professional and know a bit about this issue. I consider education to be FAR more crucial to all Canadians than some noisy whoop-de-do like this.

I am not an NDPer, trade unionist, leftist, socialist, or supporter of large government. I will match MY patriotism and family antecedents here in BC and Canada against yours, ANY time you care to.

However, the "boosterism" shown in your comments simply reeks of "Socred-Liberal" attitudes and we are both entitled to our opinions. This fiasco has nothing to do with Canadian patriotism and is simply a cheap sideshow to keep people distracted from the real issues here in BC-Canada.

...We must change the system..., no question and that will cost a lot of money. I am a "pre-boomer", my wife and I have paid between 35K to almost 60K in income taxes alone every year since we married in 1982 and, very simply, we have paid for OUR medical care and old age benefits, in spades.

But, whatever, I do enjoy life and hope you do as well. Cheers.

Yup I am a booster of Canada, the Olympics and enjoying life. I don't find any one political party to encompass my values. I want good balanced government and find that where I find it-usually not in idealology. As you said-enjoy life!

Another thumbs up for the ceremonies. Having been to Canada several times I have to say the Olympic committee in Canada did a great job.
As far as money better spent, there are ALWAYS better ways to spend money. But this is for the people of Canada to showcase what they have and to do it with pride. And the Canadians have a lot to be proud of.
Best wishes to your athletes.

The opening ceremony was well done. Some random thoughts as they occurred for me:

- I initially mistook KD Lang for a man...
- Katrina Lemay Doan (sp?) is hot
- Nice to see Rick Hanson, Wayne Gretzky, Anne Murray and a host of other Canadians I am proud of.
- Nice light show
- We were pretty inclusive throughout the ceremony
- Damn shame about that young fellow from Russian Georgia.

It was a disgusting misrespresentation of what canadians are for the most part. The indian crap that was a HUGE part of the ceremony was crap....all my friends kept saying to me, since when are we all natives?

What about the generations of germans, italians, greeks, chinese, koreans, swiss ECT that made this country great- HOW were they represented?

A total joke, and I am offended by the whole ceremony. Only in Canada would we bow down to the native indian crap, and make it front in center when 2 billion people are watching...

I never watched the opening entertainment ceremony.

I reckon the Olympics should be a sporting event and not an entertainment extravaganza. The opening ceremony should be the athletes walking in with their flags. Give them a big hand and get at the competitions.

Just like the half time show at the super bowl or the grey cup. I want to see a good game and not singing and dancing.

Duffy, actually the entertainment is supposed to be for the athletes. Somehow it got turned around in Olympics past. It is the host country welcoming athletes from around the world. I think it is a nice gesture, but I agree that the original intent has been lost. However, that was not the case in these Olympics IMHO. I am also turned off by medal counts, medal predictions etc. I am old fashioned I know but it is not about winning a medal it is about competing. I understand that is not the American way, witness the billboard in Atlanta "You don't win the Silver so much as lose the Gold"!

I've enjoyed watching the Games. The biggest surprises have been the Nordic Combined where USA scored a silver for its first ever medal (what a great race!) in that event and Russia's lackluster performances.
Kudos to Canada for earning its first host sponsored gold. Finally got that monkey off her back.
The luge is always fun to watch. 90 MPH? Not for this Texas boy. I'd rather hop on a snot slinging, cantankerous, mean ole rodeo bull before sliding on my back down that ice shoot anytime.

Dave- I-too was very impressed with the opening cerimony, and with the 'games' as I've watched on the plasma so far. Love it all. I am proud of my heritage.

I do lament the cost - spoken for, arranged and laid in concrete before the current fincial situraiton. Yes, it's costs are going to be grave - but proud I am - especialy with the

Well Dewey can be as negative as he wishes.

We however are getting geared up with all the Canada stuff I can lay my hands on!!
I am taking the family out to Vancouver next weekend.
It's going to be a quick trip as we leave Saturday first thing only to return late Sunday.

But I could not imagine not showing my kids this wonderful event. I picked us up tickets to the Short Track Speed skating. 2 Medal events that day, let’s hope we get lucky and win some Gold!!!

EH OH CANADA GO!!!

Be a lot more entertaining if we went back to the way the Greeks did it, NAKED. Big Grin And instead of medals, the winner got a Laurel wreath. Not sure, but I think they killed the losers.

That was the "summer type games" I don't think the winter games would be suitable for nakedness.

The "shrinkage" would be an embarrassment and the frost bite could be lethal.

Some of the moves the figure skaters do would be...

And hockey in the nude would likely have less body contact.

I wondered about that when my wife and I were watching the ceremony. I told her the friends I have in Western Canada would not like all of the indian homage. And I agree, for those not knowing any better, the take away is that Canada is very much an indian country.

But let's face it, what the hypsters and media portray is seldom reality.

Congratulations to Canada on winning the Hockey Gold Medal. While not a connoisseur, it looked like a good game to me!
I must confess to be rather disappointed in the grim faces of the Americans receiving the Silver Medal. If these professional;s don't like it, then DON'T PLAY. Let college players play. It was the Americans who pushed to allow pros to play in the Olympics after getting beat. Plenty of others would be happy to get a silver medal. End of rant!
Peter.

Thank-you for the kind thoughts Peter, it was a well played game and with that many excellent players it could have gone either way.
With respect to the grim faces, I couldn't help but notice that once in a while from the representatives of other countries including Canada when they didn't win gold...

Kevan, you are probably right. It was eye opening though to see the snowboarders. When they wiped out, they smiled, and then carried on! Now I am a skier not a snowboarder, and, to be quite honest I kind of "looked down" on them messing up the slopes for me. Nor any more. They seemed to have the right attitude about their sport! Having said that, the "Own the Podium" turned me off a bit!
Peter.

Agreed Peter....I think "own the Podium" was not a very well thought out nor very welcoming phrase in my opinion.
One thing I found hard to believe was the fact that we were criticized by the French-Canadian faction for not having enough French language content in the opening ceremonies....I thought we had too much !!
