MsAZW spent last weekend in Calgary visiting some friends who live near Lake Louise. She loved the place and wants to buy a house there.

Here is my question: if we were to buy a house there, can I import African trophies into Canada as a non-resident? Our friends also have a Polar Bear (among other mounts) which certainly would be cool.

You should read this about real estate in Banff. Outside the park is different. http://www.cascaderealtyservic...to-reside-provision/

As long as all your original import permits are in order there shouldn't be any issue bringing them to Canada. We allow far more species of animals to be imported than the U.S. Getting your handguns here would be more challenging but not impossible.

Canmore is a neat place, but hanging your trophies on the wall would probably get you tarred and feathered. That's where all the " environmentalists" aspire to live and then bitch about wildlife corridors and excessive development in the Bow river valley. Smiler

As TJ has looked after the OP's question,
Gizz'z sidetrack is more along the lines of my thinking upon reading this thread.

People love to love what they love, even it if destroys what they love.
All seems fair to those in love or at war.

The Bow corridor (Banff, Canmore) is an ecological disaster thanks to people that fall in love with it, then buy property here. The greatest threat to the Bow valley is the continuation of residential development.

To those people that truly Love the area and nature,

Buy some property, then bulldoze the house.

No doubt granola runs prevalent but there's lots of homes with taxidermy in them in the Bow Valley. It would be a nice place to retire for sure. Great hospitals in the area as well. Crazy housing prices though!

Cochrane is about as close to ideal, Sheephunter's home, Smiler prices are not outrageous, for Alberta, convenient for accessing the Rockies and you can see them from your home. Lots of big time movies, including Legends of the Fall and the Revenant made just west of their, for the spectacular scenery.

Thanks guys; our friends do say they are surrounded by granola crunchers. I will have to find out exactly where they live.

Depending on what she loved about it, you may want to drive a couple hrs west into B.C. may like it as much.

Great time to buy especially if you are using $US. My girl's riding instructor is a realtor and works the acreage belt north of the 1A around Cochrane. Far more listings than buyers the last 2 years. Looking outside of the Bow Valley can get you a lot more for your money.
