Gatehouse I'm sure that's true but I would never advocate carrying a handgun illegally. The system has loopholes, get as legal as you can, I say.

Uhmmmmm........NO! If I am not doing it legally then forget it!!!! I will be following this up and let you know how it goes. But bottom line is....if I can't do it legally then forget it....I am not willing to risk my other privileges. Sad but ......true. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

Just to update, the CFC sent me a letter and want me to re-up with a certified range officer. I contacted the RCMP and I am going to see the same officer that tested me before. I'm hoping he doesn't actually require range time and just writes a new letter... I also have to redo the stupid questionairre, which is a beaurocratic waste of time. I'm going to copy the answers I provided last time, word-for-word...

Just went through this process in May. They previously wanted range time, but no guidelines whatsoever. My buddy and I ( who are range officers with our local club) made up a form. Checklist of transport, forms, holster, range procedures, safe draw, adequate hit ratio. We were approved previously as free miners. This time, my initial renewal was sent back for the same questionaire( which I filled out ahead of time and answered the same as before), and a proof of proficiency form .Their office didn't have a set form to follow, just guidelines of info needed. I looked strangely like what my buddy and I had come up with. But it now had to include distances, stances and hit ratio as a number. The regional CFO for northern BC ( Whitehorse)had to do a phone interview, and won't recommend semi auto for carry, not reliable enough. Strange opinion, considering he's ex-RCMP.We both got renewed, myself for my .44, and my buddy for his .357. The feel I got from the whole process was that, if as a free-miner, I didn't have a registered claim by the time I renew again... I won't get renewed. The whole process is annoying, but you need to grind your teeth and go through it. They make the rules, change them as they see fit, and if you don't go along, you get refused and there is no appeal process.

Exactly, wsquared! They make it up as they go along. The idiotic thing is the ATC App has a provision for simple self defense, yet they refuse to issue an ATC for that. If I had $10M in the bank I think I'd take the bastards to court over it and argue the case that a man should be able to get ATC for self defense... but I don't have the $10M...

Demonical; I just read all this and like to try this as well, but I have some questions. Can anybody get trappers lic. even if one does not have a line..? Are there area and or time limits on the lic ? The H guns what are the rules (can one use more than one like a 454 one day and during hunting a 22 for chickens? What is involved in the shooting test (time and how acc.)I can shoot my 29 S&W faster and more acc. in a short time frame than my 454 ? The lic. has to be renewed yearly? I like to do this even if just out of principal. Thanks Martin

In Alberta anyone can get a Resident Trappers License. With that license you could do contract work for the ministry I suppose removing problem beavers from roadside ditches, or working on a Registered Trapline with the consent of the trapper that owns the rights to the trapline; any animals would count against the quota of the Registered Trapline and that would have to be worked out between you and the line owner. Also I think you would be able to do work for farmers trapping coyote, beaver etc that were a nuisance. As far as the shooting goes, I think that is up to the discretion of the person testing you. The RCMP officer that tested me is a certified firearms instructor with the RCMP. He said I must bring the holster that I planned to use. Both my Ruger SRH and Ruger Redhawk fit in the Galco holster that I bought. When he tested me last winter, he placed an object in the snow at about 25 yards, then had me draw quickly, aim and fire. On the day he tested me I shot very well, I really only had one poor shot. Of course he made me shoot both guns that I was registering on the ATC. The same guy is going to test me again. I'm hoping to ace the test again and maybe next time he will just re-date the letter rather then go through the damn testing again. The RCMP officer is a good guy, just doing what the law dictates. I still haven't got to the range with him though; I gotta make a phone call to arrange a date and time. I think you could register a Semi-auto on your ATC. I do not think there is any specifications or limitations on that.
