Here is the report...

A passenger who survived the crash of a light aircraft on Thursday that killed the pilot used a satellite phone to bring rescuers to the site of the tragedy near Fort Liard, N.W.T.

The single-engine airplane crashed into a heavily wooded area about 90 kilometres from Fort Liard, located in the southwestern corner of the territory.

RCMP have not released the name of the pilot, but a family member confirmed to CBC News late Friday that the deceased is Cam Lancaster, a co-owner of Nahanni Butte Outfitters.

Chris Meshue, the aircraft's only passenger, "initiated the call-outs, explaining that the pilot was unconscious," Lance White, the search-and-rescue pilot who airlifted Lancaster from the crash site to Fort Simpson, N.W.T., told CBC News on Friday.

"It was through his efforts and his use of the satellite phone that the actual co-ordination rescue was very, very quick. He met the aircraft on the sand bar and led people to the crash site."

Meshue was taken to the hospital in Fort Simpson as a precaution, but he was released shortly after without serious injuries.

RCMP are investigating the crash.

Nahanni Butte Outfitters, owned by the Lancaster family, guides big-game hunting trips in the Mackenzie Mountain region of the territory.

Very sad news indeed.
