Hi I would like to plan a Groundhog type hunt for next spring/summer. I am located in ~ northern Ontario. Any suggestions on location, time frame????? Is it still feasible to go to South Dakota with all of the post 911 permits? Is Manitoba, Sask. or Alberta just as good a bet? Other than shooting ground hogs when I was a kid I haven't done any serious varmint hunting but would like to do some with my son before it is too late. Any and all help would be great!! Thanks Ian

ilw: You want to go PD shooting - great targets if you like longer range shooting. You won't find any groundhogs near northern Ontario. I would call the US Customs office in the city nearest you to find out the latest on taking guns into the US. I wouldn't think it would be a big deal, but these days, who knows?

If you want to hunt gophers, Alberta or Saskatchewan is probably a good bet. With the ban on Strychnine, the farmers are desperate for any solution. I'm not sure if it's still on, but in Saskatchewan they recently had a gopher shooting derby for a couple of years. The animal rights people were very upset . The best part is, that since it technically isn't hunting, you don't need a licence or even worry about being a resident. Just find yourself field full of the suckers and you're in business. My brother in law from Ontario couldn't believe his eyes the first time we went out. In one afternoon, we killed a couple of hundred and barely made a dent in the population. I can't believe someone would actually travel to go and shoot gophers. Boggles my mind a little. Anyway you'd have little problems getting permission. the chef

Hello; So Chef, you wouldn't be interested in visiting the world famous Gopher museum in Torrinton, Alberta? They had calls from all over North America protesting the murder of rodents for the exhibits. Sask or Alberta very good choices for gophers. You will need approval from the BATF to take firearms into the USA. You must alos have a valid hunting lic. for one of the states or attending a regonized shoot. I go south from Sask each year after PD's. Paper work no big deal.

I wanted to build in a gopher shoot when I was in Calgary to get married this past September, but my new wife nixed the idea. "We're only there for 3 days, you have to meet the family, yada, yada..." She was right, of course. But, I keep encouraging her to go visit her parents and I'll come along. I've got enough brass to bring along about 500 rounds of .222 Rem, loaded with 50 gr. Hornady VMax that shoots REAL tight. If I'm really lucky I might even get there during upland game season.
