Cabelas.com received my order of a rifle scope and rings, Leupold. Because I have a Canadian billing address, eventhough I was sending this as a gift to a brother-in-law in Calif, they sent an inquiry to insure this product was not going to be later imported to Canada. I understand that they are obliged to do that legally. Here is the problem: After I responded indicating this was a gift and would not be later exported from the US to Canada, their supervisor decided she didn't believe that and denied the order!! Can you believe the gall for this $9 per hour wonder? I have been a customer of Cabelas since I was a little boy getting by Dad to send my lawn mowing money in 1961. I am almost ashamed of how much money I have spent with Cabelas. No more! I demanded to be unsubsribed to the email list and to stop all mail out of catalogs. It is one thing to ask the question because you are legally bound to, but then to determine the answer you got is true or not is way overstepping their bounds. This is what we put up with from the new Obamamerica.

Cabela's has become the hunters' Walmart, just another "big box" chainstore. Too bad, I miss the old Herter's.

Personally I am very disappointed with Cabela's these days. I simply cannot order clothing on-line, none of it fits. Everything is made in China or the Philippines. Last order we did was for some winter gloves and a pair of boots. I have big hands and take a 2X which is not easy to find.

My wife found some gloves on their web adds and ordered those along with a pair of rubber boots. Nothing fit. The 2X gloves fit my wife and she is 5'3" and hands half the size of mine. The boots? Well the top part that goes around your calf was so small you could not even get your foot down through the ankle area to see if the boot part actually fit. Which it wouldn't…….

Was just in Cabela's Winnipeg on Sunday. Same grief as usual. There were several hunters there and they were all complaining about the same thing with regards to sizing. Nothing fit, everything was too small for size.

On non clothing items things have been better and staff/shipping good in most cases. Although we can frequently order items from the US stores and pay the higher shipping, cheaper than we can get the same item shipped locally at Canada Post/courier rates.

Bottom line….. I have to agree that overall it is the sportsman's Walmart when all is said and done.

We like the Cabelas stores. They are by far the largest and most impressive outdoor stores we have ever seen.

We have been in the ones in Hamburg, PA, S Dakota and the new one here in E Hartford, CT.

I have been buying outdoor gear since 1953.

I have four down filled parkas here in CT. Three of which I got at very good prices in spring sales at Cabelas. One is a Cabelas parka XL, Long. All have handwarmer pockets etc.

I keep one in each car in case of emergencies. It gets cold around here and colder at the camp in VT that I have owned since 1964.

Cabelas makes our sport look good with that diorama of animals and a larger selection of gear and guns by far than any store I have ever seen since the 1950's. They have a restaurant in there! No other 'gunshop' comes close to the impression the Cabelas store makes.

Jim,

cant comment for the firearms but our western and southern neighbour is getting crazy about that and continue to pretend the country of love in firearms ....

on the sizing i can confirm your says ... you know how small i am and even the 3xl tall is not fitting me and same problem for gloves.

i dont know where to find now a good company that is pro hunting and where we ll find a lot of different sizing in the right fit ...

see you very soon.

Cabela's has it's issues, but out of all the sporting good type box stores, it is the best IMO. Wholesale Sports is a joke, and Bass Pro lacks on many levels with hunting related items. All of the other one's that our neighbours to the south are privy to I'll just leave out cause I really only have experience with Scheels on more than one occasion. Cabela's has the best selection of inventory of all the stores and I'm more than willing to overlook a few sizing issues to get something better overall. Sizing problems are to be expected with mail order anyways...

I'm sure they aren't without their issues but I really like Cabelas. Their brand name stuff is made really well and they do carry a good variety of hunting gear. I think we are lucky to have one in Alberta. I just wish it wasn't three hours away.

Cabela's is the only place that I can find jeans that fit me and I'm 6'5 and wear 38"x34" jeans. I find lots of things at Cabela's are "American-sized" meaning lots of waist sizes but almost nothing with an inseam over 32" and very little to accommodate someone with a 76" wingspan. Still they've got a ton of selection if you can get into a store to try things on.

As for the whining about where the product is sourced, well, as soon as you are willing to commit to spend $200 for a pair of blue jeans and $800 for a hunting coat then maybe companies will go back to producing clothing in the US. If you embrace "lower prices everyday" then this is what you get.

I hardly ever spend $$ at Cabelas. Its more of a novelty store to me.

And, if I want to look at a gun.... I have to take a number and wait for my name to be called. No thanks!

I will stick to Sportman's Warehouse. Although not with out its faults, I have a little bit better experiences.

I can relate to the issues with sizing and other issues with Cabelas bUT I have always been treated super fair by their 800# or stores Customer Service - always refunded, no questions asked.

Here in CT, they are the only game in town....

That's a common perception but it's not entirely accurate. Many people have the idea that it takes hours of time to make a single garment and that the labor cost is a major factor in the final price of the product. In a modern factory the amount of time required to produce an article of cloting is measured in seconds and the labor cost per unit is pennies. The cost to produce a pair of blue jeans or a hunting coat domestically (USA or Canada) would be - at most - a few dollars more than China or elsewhere in the Far East.

For some reason, the "powers that be" decided we don't need those kind of jobs and a lot of Americans decided they don't want to do them.

Cabelas just dropped the Carhartt line in favor of their house brand called Tough neck or some such.

If not happy with Cabelas, try Sportsmans warehouse.

The first opening of the current Cabelas location in Edmonton set new sales records higher than any opening of any store in the USA. FS

Personally, I kind of like Cabelas. A new store opened here in Regina in mid Sept. I received a "special pre opening" invite a day or two before the grand opening. The place was packed!! As I was wandering around I cam upon a very busy table. Door prize enteries. I passed by because of the long lineup. After touring the store for a bit I came upon the table again with no one there so I thought what the hell. I distinctly remember thinking that this was a waste of time and effort as the draw bin was stuffed full. A few weeks later I got a phone call and you guessed it. Grand prize winner, boat and motor with $1400 gift card!!!

I have since sold the boat to my brother and booked a hunt with Mokore Safaris for next Sept. with the proceeds.

Yea, I kind of like Cabelas!!

As for buying I like having lots of competition I buy from who has the best price and quality.

I don't get to upset with any one store (unless they do something really stupid on the political side) or screw me over.

Other then that if the price and goods are right I buy what I need.

I'm not sure if there is a difference between US and Canadian sizing.

Most places I wear an XL. At cabelas I am a large tall. So I don't know what sizing problems you speak of.

Sometimes it does feel like wallyworld, with a lot of cheap Chinese crap, but filter the crap out(all outdoor stores have this stuff i have found) and you can find some nice products. I like the outfitter series line of clothes.

I also like the fine gun room, and the not entire emphasis on whitetails.

I also like the selection of ammo. Online and in stores, I find it better than many. MidwayUSA rivals the ammo selection, but doesn't have a store.

I have the cabelas card, but use it mostly at other places. Build up points and then use it to buy ammo.

Same here. I've spent probably 15000 over the years. Not one issue. It's real simple. If you don't like Cabelas then don't shop there.

Right....and plus you get to pay 58% tax on your income in Germany! It really must be the best place on earth to buy hunting gear!
