Well I have word that I was a good boy this year and Santa is bringing me the twin to Cal's gun. A Watson Brothers .500NE 3 1/4" from 1907. I'm having some minor work done on it at the moment and I'll post pictures when it arrives!!!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I see some wagers being placed this spring at the first annual "Watson Brothers Brothers International Double Rifle Shoot in Wild and Rustic Willow Alaska". I will be in the peanut gallery collecting bets.

Mike and I will be bringing modified choke shotguns complete with No 1 Buckshot. Of course we will make this fair and use only Side by Side shotguns. I doubt our accuracy will be on par with others as we will not be using Palma contour barrels on our shotguns!

Happy Holidays,

Matt

I just got of the phone with a very good smith.
I asked him about english double rifles of the early 1900`s the- likes of H&H,WR,etc.. He says these rifles were only good for looks and when taken apart a knowledgeable smith can see that everything else is poor.He also said that Merkel is crap-he has worked on a number of these.I asked him about Krieghoff and he did not sound crazy about them either.

I spent my life in the public school classroom and have no end to the stories of asinine statements in nearly all walks of life. Shootaway takes the cake in the areas of outright stupidity, lack of common sense, and the inability to relate to peers. I would like to know of this 'smith so perhaps I and others here can send our work to him. I never cease to be amazed. When I'm over one epistle of idiocy, another surfaces.

Shootaway, If I was a doc, I'd put you on a pill (or several). I would like to, however, recommend a good doctor for you. Unfortunately, Jack Kevorkian is no longer practicing medicine. He is what you need!

Laugh with me on this, fellow garbage men.

Cal,

I know who he's talking about I believe; a very reputable gunsmith. I've heard the same crap from this person over the years, if it's the person I'm thinking of, and it's all about selling what they push. I may be wrong.

I hope he's not referring to Butch.

All I can say is thank God there is a difference between a very good smith and great gun smiths.

I have said it before: I think that double rifles represent the blending of art and the effort of skilled craftsmen/artisans for that period of time that was post industrial revolution. Sure, we have some steels that are better and manufacturing processes that are faster than those used to construct rifles 100+ years ago. It is the fact that someone did such a great job with their skills that impresses me.

So, here is an easy litmus test: Any Alaskans on this board who hunt moose accidently shoot a cow instead of a bull? Not me. Gee, I guess you have more experience than me Shootaway. I will ask that the others from AK chime in. I bet none of us have your experience or wisdom or viewpoint.

Cheers,

Matt

Frostbit has an excellent piece of trash to add to the garbage we have collected over the years.

A gunsmith and benchrest shooter told me years ago to steer clear of vintage double rifles because they become an addiction.

Cheers,

Matt

Certainly a much more accurate comment about vintage doubles.

Those garbage/trash British doubles are an incredible cost saver as well. Especially when you buy one 5 months before a planned wedding. Just think of all that money you are going to save on the cancelled wedding. Big Grin sofa

Frostbit:
Wedding savings will be offset by head and body trauma and subsequent medical bills.

One solution that I know of:
A gent bought an expensive double rifle but told his wife is cost 20% of what he paid. No names, but he IS reading this thread!!
Brett: would you like me to formulate an appraisal of, say, 2000$? For an additional fee I will give you a "receipt" from Walmart for their annual double rifle sale.
What are friends for?
Cal
