Read the double rifle bullet of the future thread! We did lots of tests with my 470. Yes you should be able to regulate with any suitable powder.

Hello, kld:
IMR 3031 is not very popular these days for the big doubles. Trying the slower powders you mention seems a much better idea.
If you duplicate the speed with the same bullet, it is posible (or indeed probable) the rifle regulates... but you will have to try and then experiment.
Best luck

Antonio

Johann Mickelitsch made this double in 1958, has been shot very little, my first double purchase, I am learning to absorb the recoil and get it ready for the Selous in Aug. 2012

I'm not sure where I got this load from?
I load in my .470 Krieghoff
a Fed. Mag primer in a Fed. nickle case with 115/116 grs. of IMR 4831SC behind Barnes 500 gr. bullets. I get good regulation and POI with this load and don't notice recoil when shooting at DG. No signs of pressure. Very good penitration. I worked up to this load as I had a lot of muzzle flash with a lesser powder charge and low POI. Just my .02 cents worth.

Maybe it will and maybe not, but there is a formula for reduced loads and right off hand I can't recall what it is but in a .470 with 500 gr lead bullets it figures to about 45 grs. of XMP-5744 to come to the same POI with most .470s using IMR-4831..Velocity is about 1600 FPS as I recall.
