What do sticks do to the accuracy of a double? I tried shooting off sticks with a double once and didn't have a good result.

I know the double will recoil up and away from the barrel shot.

Are the top of the sticks in the way of the barrel recoil angle thus influencing the end position of the bullet?

Allen, did you have your off hand resting on the sticks, or was the rifle directly on the sticks?

I know I would not have just put the forearm on the sticks because a) I would have wanted to hold on to the rifle during the recoil, b) I would not have wanted to get the forearm scratched and c) the rifle would not have wanted to sit level in the cracks.

So I am sure I did not just rest it in the V of the sticks but am not completely sure how much of my hand was in the V.

I suspect I had just the tips of my fingers in the V of the sticks and the forearm on my fingers but there was still plenty of stick above my rifle.

The double rifle will recoil away from the barrel "NOT" being shot, or any hard surface, it touches, regardless of the barrel being shot!

Hog Killer is on the right track! The sticks are not well suited to double rifle shooting, unless the forearm is held in the same manner as when shooting off hand.

A double rifle should never touch anything other than the shooter's hands, cheek, and shoulder!

Thats about what I suspected. I am thinking that the bottom line is that one could not rest a double against a tree trunk or in sticks and be confident of where the shot is going.

Palmer, you can rest against anything, as long as you keep your hand between the rifle, and the object! I do this all the time with my doubles. I'm right handed, so it is natural for me to rest my forehand against the right side of the tree while shooting the right barrel, and holding the rifle tightly as if shooting offhand! That barrel recoils away from the left barrel anyway, and the second shot will be at a moveing target most times, and is shot free hand! If you shoot the left barrel first, then the fore hand needs to be rested against the left of the tree. I use sticks that I made, and they are made with two poles forming a "V" with a strap of leather from one side to the other accross the top of the "V". The third pole only coming up to the apex of the other two, I covered the tops of the poles with airconditioner pipeing insulation, that is soft foam. This lets me place my hand in the "V" under the rifle, while holding the barrels properly! Works for me!
