When I talked to Lonnie at Hornady yesterday, he indicated that the project had been shelved. Then I got a call back from one of the tech guys working on it, and its still very much alive. They've done some pressure testing and are still pondering bullet diameter. ------------------------------------------------ "Serious rifles have two barrels, everything else just burns gunpowder."

Don't hold your breath folks.....this don't make any sense at all. If one wanted to start in the safari ammo line he'd certainly start with the most used to get a faster return on his developement dollar.....and that's the 470 IMO..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." That's pure BS. They want to start at a place in the market where there's an obvious hole - a caliber with a lot of rifles in the marketplace with little factory ammo available - and right now that's the .450/.400. The .470 would be the last place to start. ------------------------------------------------ "Serious rifles have two barrels, everything else just burns gunpowder."

Another bird told me this: I met up with Craig Boddington when in Zimbabwe. Interestingly, Craig was hunting with a new Ruger no. 1 in .450/.400 3 inch NE. Hornady are now making cases for this fine old caliber and Craig gave me one of these cartridges. It looks good, but to be honest, not of the same quality as those you guys make. The .450/.400 ammo Craig was using for buffalo was loaded with the new Hornady Interbond bullet. I spoke to the PH's who hunted with him after he left, and they said it performed terribly. It was expanding way too quickly and in the end they abandoned it and used only solids to hunt the rest of the buffalo on license. Husky

That's interesting and hopefully an indication that this may occur. Craig was at Dallas Safari Club and as I recall told Rusty about Ruger working on the #1, with Hornday doing the ammo. Hopefully they'll go back to the drawing board and toughen up the bullets. Hornady's 405 Win bullets are great plinkers in my 450-400. Having their cases available would be icing on the cake and give the old gal new life. Bob

That goodness it is proceeding. At least he had a rife in the field. Next year we can count on a gun rag article about the new Ruger #1. Working title. . . Husky, I knew the Interbond was a failure as soon as they came out just by shooting a 500 grain 458 into two 5 gallon nylon buckets of water. Picture below (star shaped brass jacket, retained weight 350 grains). Bullet on left is A-Square Dead Tough which was not so tough and the 500 grain Woodleigh PP which is descent. Surely Hornady knew they had a dud and released it to dangerous game hunters anyway! Either 1) Hornady does not test their bullets, or 2) they do and released them anyway. Thanks alot! Hornady could improve the Interbond by buying Kodiaks instead and calling them an Interbond. Same cup and draw jacket, but with tapered (V-shaped jacket). There is as much craft as science in making a good premium bullet, and just bonding the core to a varmit jacket just gives you a bonded varmit bullet. Bill Steigers had this figured out in 1964 with the original and still best Bitterroot. And he managed to do it with copper tubing, which is a tougher proposition than a cup and draw jacket. Kodiak has largely immitated the Bitterrot but uses less taper on the jacket and gilding metal, not the best solution but a descent bullet at an affordable price. Retained weight 440 - 457 grains for 450 grain and 500 grain RN. Considering the 450 grain was recovered at 2650 fps and retained more weight than a Hornady 500 grain at under 2,400 fps, thats saying something. Just so you all know I am not picking on Hornady, Speer also managed to screw up the original Trophy Bonded Bear Claw by changing just one single thing. They used gilding metal rather than pure copper. Why cant Hornady or Speer make as good of a bullet as Bill Steigers did forty years ago, or North Fork and Alaska Bullet works today? Answer is, they dont care, or dont know how. This is the reason so many of us Respect Mike Brady a ture premium bullet maker. (Pictures are fired and unfired North Fork Cup Point). And 450 and 400 grain NF soft point taken from buffalo at 2550 fps and 2700 fps! Compare this performanse with a SD 270 400 grain 458 at 2700 fps to the 500 grain SD .340 Trophy Bonded Speer at less than 2,400 fps. Just adding a solid base to a bonded bullet does not make a good bullet either. To make a real premium bonded bullet, first you have to make a bullet that would work without bonding. Then bond it. Mike Brady, the late Jack Carter, and Bill Steigers understands this. Dont get me wrong, I am all for Hornady bringing out flanged ctgs. I have always thought a Ruger No. 1 should be chambered for a nitro express (like the JD Jones line) after having the extractor repeatedly slip over the rim of my 375 h and h. I like the short handy No.1. And we can always reload the Hornady brass with a real premium bullet! Andy

Maybe Craig's problem with the interbond will lead to Hornady strengthening it. Let's hope so anyway. 465H&H
