Pistol bullets in .470

A while back I had a client show up on a pig hunt with his Chapuis double in .470 to shoot a bit (given his choice in ammo, thank goodness he wasn't planning to hunt with it).

He said a friend in his SCI chapter was experienced with doubles and was loading pistol bullets in it to keep the recoil and cost down.

They looked like Hornady XTP's. I don't recall if they were the 325 or 400 grain.

Although he didn't have any "regular" ammo to compare with but these bullets didn't seem to regulate AT ALL (which is understandable). The gun was several FEET off at 50 yards.

This gentlemen was rather new to doubles so I explained the whole barrel regulation thing to him and he said he never thought about it, he just trusted this reloading friend.

With the great weight difference between these pistol bullets and what these guns are designed to shoot I wouldn't think that would ever work. Has anyone had these bullets regulate at any velocity or is this reloader guy just blowing smoke?

Kyler

I got some 400 grain Barnes pistol bullets to regulate in a .470 NE. But as I recall it took something like 65 or 70 grains of XMP5744 to do it, compared to only 45.0 grains of XMP5744 to get a 500 grain lead bullet to regulate.

I have not had any luck getting overweight bullets to regulate in a double, but underweight bullets have not been a problem if I played around with them for a while.

I believe the load you guys are talking about is 45 grains of 5744 and a 500 grain bullet, not 450 grains of 5744 and a 500 grain bullet-LOOK OUT. A 470 case would not hold that much powder-thank God.

I used Hornady bullets and 5744 (the load escapes me right now)...somewhere around 53 gr...and my Merkel regulated EXACTLY with my hunting load(s) of North Forks and Woodleighs. Recoil is A LOT less than full power loads.

Tony's 75% load works almost with any chambering he's tried. A bullet that weighs 75% of the normal bullet, useing the same, or close charge of powder, regulates most of the time.

75% of a 500 gr bullet, = 375 grs, useing the powder charge for the 500 gr bullet should work with very little experimenting. About the nearest in weight would be a 350 gr pistol. bullet. What is the diamether of the 480 Ruger bullet? Confused

Mac,
They are .475". Link

Tim,
No time soon, it was just a question for the group. Since they were so far off in that gun I wondered if anyone had pulled it off correctly.

Kyler,
Pistol bullets will work fine in a double provided you load them correctly. The are a great way to practice without spending over a buck per bullet on the hunting variety.

Darn! Those pistol bullets are nearly as expensive as 500 gr Woodleigh SPs. That's not much of a price break.

Edited to reflect correct bullet dia!

This is one way to safely use mono-lithic solids in a 470NE double rifle! Also verious lead molded .416 bullets with paper patch can be use for cheap shooting of your 470NE double.

While not in a double, I am shooting speer 400gr Gold dots in my 470ar with GREAT results... the bullets seem to stay together very well, even at a MV of 2500ish, and impact over 2300

Mac, .458 bullets only need .016" paper patching to fit the .470s. That is two wraps with .004" paper. This would be great with the 405gr Remmys.
