I have tried to do a seach and found lots of info however much of what I found was older. I found posts which said only use authentic Dacron for fillers however some said that the generic from Walmart is just fine. So has there been any new information on this? Am I fine just using the generic Walmart stuffing for a filler?
Thanks
Mac

If it looks like this, and is some kind of polyfil then it will work!

Ive tried dacron, cotton wool and kapok in my 505, but none are satisfactory; they dont burn up, and the remains litter the range like a snowstorm!
Best option is foamed filler. i use he stuff from barnes bullet packs.

In large caliber cartridges you just need to use accurate 5744 without fillers for reduced loads. I have been shooting my 450 NE with this powder since Butch Searcy gave me the load and it works just great. If you go to this website you can get a good idea of a starter load or I am sure there are others on this blog using the powder. For my 450 NE it is 35 grains with a magnum primer.

The 5744 is fine for reduced loads, but the filler being discussed is used in full house loads! The NOT burning thing, Indlovu mentioned, is what you want in a fiber filler, because the cotton, or anything flamable, will smolder, and start forest, or grass fires. If the white filler bothers you dye it brown, or green so it matches the dirt, or grass on the range. Big Grin

The foam works well but it doesn't burn either! The best foam I've found is the blue closed cell foam mattress's for back packers to use under their sleeping bags. It is about 1/4" thick, and with a wad cutter type punch, a $4 Wal Mart mattress will make over 1500 wads!

All of the Dacron/Polyfil that I use looks unburnt and looks like you could reload it again.

Kynoch foam wads work very well. They are lighter than Dacron or Poly fillers.

I am with Rusty.
Any fire-retardant dacron polyester fiber fill works fine. Dacron brand is not required for regulation compatibility.

The packing of this fluffy stuff into a case half full of 5744 will also improve the ballistic uniformity of reduced loads and will require slight adjustment to even lower powder charge for the same average velocity as the no-filler reduced load.

Sure, the sloppy no filler 5744 works, but add some filler and they work better.

I believe the maker of 5744 specifically warns against using fillers with 5744.

Dacron versus generic polyester put to rest ,eh?

Highjack:

5744 is designed for reasonable usefulness without fillers, but it ain't the greatest for accuracy that way, and of course it is not meant for top speed, just low velocity, "reduced" loads in large cases with large caliber bullets.

"Relatively low bulk density," double-base, short-grained, extruded powder with high nitroglycerin content:

http://www.accuratearms.com/data/5744.htm

Where does it say that use of fillers is forbidden? Just says it is designed to get by with no filler for the carefree casual shooter looking for less fuss, no filler. Big Grin

If I use loads that produce the same velocity with less powder than a lowball no-filler load and get much better uniformity and no pressure signs, i.e., 1650 fps with 340-grainers in a .395/.416 Rigby:

What is wrong with that?

Dacron and any good filler will not burn up, that will leave sticky gooey stuff in your barrel...I'd rather pick it up if it offends anyone..It should come out the barrel just like it went in except compacted in a cylinder shape.

I use the Kynoch fillers and/or Dacron..I prefer the Dacron as I can weigh it and use more or less depending on the space I need to fill.
