Peep Sight for double

I wanted to make a simple peep sight that could be attached to the rib of a double. Here is my first prototype. No elevation adjustment as I made to to the height needed. Does have windage adjustment.

Nice job Sam. Looks cool. Good to see that you can tighten a screw rather than just drift it on a dovetail. You could easily cut a dovetail on a scope base and fix it to a bolt rifle as well.

BTW the fences on your rifle look like Boys' Scout badges. I didn't know you were an old Boys' Scout buddy!! Wink rotflmo

OK Nakihunter,

Yes that fence work looks like crap. I do have and know how to use a bastard file so those fences can come down. Yes it is a Sabbati 500NE and I had to try one. After working with CCMDOC's 450-400 I really thought these guns were OK except for the crown issue. I found this gun and it has proper crowns and a perfect regulation target. I have only shot it twice so far and it was dead on with 570 grain bullet at proper speed. I'm going to put this gun through the ringer for you guys.

I am referring to the other engraving on the fences.
Fluer-di-lis are within the arches of the Umbrella.
At least that's my understanding.

Get rid of that insert and you'll have a perfect ghost ring !! With a 1/8" square post you'll have a fast ,accurate system.

I agree! With that insert removed it would be faster, and IOM far more accurate!

JR who posts here occasionally simply couldn't shoot his 470NE Merkel Safari withthe factory rear sight! A gun smith made him a fixed ghost-ring sight and filed the standing part of the factory sight down leaving it as a fillet for the dove tail in the quarter rib.

I witnessed JR put two rounds in the brain pan of a charging target, from 15 yards, in rappid succession, down at Monty Kalogeras's SAFARI SHOOTING SCHOOL in Texas! Those two shots were exactly 1 inch apart both at the same elevation on the target. Damn good shooting, and a good recomendation for the ghost-ring sight on a double rifle!

I had one made at one time..It required cutting a dove tail of about an inch lengthwise from the start of the rib at the chamber, and then installing a L shaped peep sight, with a detent hole in the leg that clicked it in in..The rib is centered exactly on a double rifle so no windage was necessary and we filed in a NECG gold faced partridge to zero..It was tiny and tough and was dead on at 75 yards. I also had a blank that replaced the peep and you could not see the cut..also had to have the rib sights cut flush into the rib so as not to interfere with the peep.

Rick Stickley, a true metal genious did the work, while I held him captive at gun point.

Here is the peep sight I just had installed on my .30-06 Baikal. The sight came from here:

http://www.skinnersights.com/tactical_sights_14.html

The gunsmith cut it down a little, drifted out the orignal rear sight, made the dovetail a little larger and wedged the bottom of the sight so it would fit in. There are two screws that hold it down and will allow you to adjust for windage. The aperature itself screws up and down for elevation. I chose the one with wings because I like having the sight protected from life's little dings. I shot aperatures in the military my whole career so am very comfortable with them.

Ps. Those ARE snap caps in the chambers!

Sam, that is lovely. Nice and solid, no chance of damaging it. I see that it hangs over the breech face. I would be (a little )concerned about pinching something in it. I left mine so far forward because I wanted to still be able to use the rib for a scope without removing the peep.

BwanaCole,

I wanted to get the sight as far back as possible and not get in the way of loading. Never thought about pinching something between it. Good catch! Back to the file.

Very nice, CAN I HAVE THE OLD ONE? Seriously, I need something of the proper height for my Sabatti 450NE that won't require changing out the front sight and that will use the existing factory drilled holes. Are you going to start making these?

After making peep sight for my Sabatti I found the front sight was just too low. I made a taller front sight which was a pain and still needed a little more height. I wanted to be able to use NECG sights to adjust my point of impact without having to make more front sights. I decided to make a front sight riser block to use these sights. Here is what I came up with.

Sam, I haven't looked re: results of your testing out the Sabatti. Is there a post here or do you have results from your work with the rifle? I am considering this, ie, a field grade type, use it here in North America and Africa. The price range is something I could figure to afford. My thought was a 9.3 first because I would use it and something like a 450/400 or maybe just the latter. This topic intrigues me as does the Peep type sight. Thanks, david

David,

Most of what I have posted about the Sabatti is in the thread "500 Nitro a new exploration". In that thread Michael458 and myself did a lot of load work with my 500 Sabatti. I like you thought the price was right and wanted to give one a try. My gun shoots really well but I had to make the sights to get it to shoot where I wanted it to. I think the newer guns are much better than the first that came out with those ground crowns. I plan on taking my Sabatti to Austrailia this July for buffalo and it may end up being my knock around the world gun.

Okay, that is what I want - a knock around hunting rifle, not a show piece. I can do the 74R for 3k or a bit more and the second, if I ever do it, in a larger bore, say 450 NE or the 450/400. I want a rifle to use to compliment the bolt action battery that is capable of taking dangerous game but that would be perfect for a hunting double all round. I have been exchanging with Ashok on this and he referred me to you. I will look at the 500 nitro thread and do some digging.

Mac I think you are speaking about the sight I made. There is a company who makes steel body replacement peep sight for milt surplus type rifles.I think mine was a sks sight.

I called and asked what sight that they offered was about 1/2" wide. gave them rough deminsons on length and had my sight in a week, a little drawfiling and two holes drilled and taped into the rib we were good to go. Works well for full house loads, A little off with 5744 I need to make a shim for under the rear base or a matching front sight for each load I shoot.
