UPDATE, 10-15:
Gents: My new book has cleared customs and is waiting on a truck to bring the pallets to my home in Alaska. Expect a week or two.

Second, on the digital double rifle magazine, here's what I will do: I will produce a 60-100 page inaugural issue and make it available gratis to all who want it. If it looks good and meets your approval I will continue, if not, then it was a noble effort. However, I don't want the magazine to be the world of double rifles according to Cal, so I would like to ask you if you'd be kind enough to submit items for publication: photos and specs of your double(s), hunt stories with your double(s), and technical or historical information about double rifles. So many of you have experiences and knowledge that far exceed what little I know or have done, it would be nice to have a record of anything and everything double rifles.
Cheers and I will let you know the day the book is in hand.
Cal

Gents:
My next attempt at writing about the double rifles we know and love is being printed as this is posted. I would imagine by October the book will be in my hands and this is dependent on shipping from the printers and the time to clear customs in California.

Here is the cover and three pages--two from the chapter on definitions and some Verney Carron rifles in the last chapter.

The books is The Double Rifle Primer--how to know and do everything in the world of double rifles.
It will be 184 pages, full size, hard cover with dust jacket and thick, glossy paper. The chapters are:
Why a double rifle…………………………………….7 pages and 6 photos
Double rifle definitions……………….………………43 pages and 77 photos
Double rifle cartridges………………..………….…8 pages and 27 photos of boxes
Double rifle makers……………………..……….…12 pages and 21 photos of labels
How to buy a double rifle…………………….…….11 pages and 10 photos
How to reload and shoot a double rifle…………..28 pages and 29 photos
How to clean and care for a double rifle….………6 pages and 5 photos
Your double rifle……………………………………19 pages and 11 photos
How to sell a double rifle………………………..….2 pages and 0 photos
Publication on double rifles……………………….10 pages and 0 photos
Where can I get……………………………………...4 pages and 2 photos
The double rifle today………………………..……15 pages and 39 photos

The quality will be the same as with my previous two books (the .600 nitro express and the British Bore Rifle).
Price will be 70$, but due to the high cost of shipping I will pay the postage to US addresses if three or more copies are sent to the same address. However, due to problems in the past I do not sell wholesale. All shipping is done via USPS priority mail with full insurance. I do not ship "book rate" as I get lots of angry emails when the parcel takes four weeks to arrive (and up to six weeks!) and with priority mail I use the USPS boxes where I have to drive 100 miles round trip to buy other shipping containers.

I am not accepting any money now and it is best to wait until the book is in hand. Feel to email me or PM with any questions. I don't want any unhappy folks due to unforeseen delays (such as customs waiting six weeks to get a copy of the reverse of my social security card!).

On a second note, I am looking into a quarterly digital magazine on double rifles--only double rifles, and what we do with them. If this looks more promising I will make a separate post with details and requests for photos of your rifles, hunt photos and stories, and technical data. The cost of a hard copy magazine puts this out of the realm of possibility.

Cheers, gents.
Cal

Any inscription without the word Shootaway would be fine. That said, I'm sure Brett would love his inscription to include a Shootaway reference.

It can say shootaway but it is not endorsed by him.It would be like a copyright infringementHe would then be entitled for compensation(worthless pennies)....but seriously I might buy one if I am convinced it is at least somewhat good...but I am currently on non spending mode.I would really like to buy a borescope but like I said...

Yes we are in for the Double Book. Be sure to have Rob write the forward for your "machine gun" book. I'm sure Joyce would be happy to represent the fairer sex in the photo shoot if she gets to cap off a few more clips in the Thompson, by far her favorite. Big Grin

Well, since word is about out I must come clean with you all. The book is in my name only. Shootaway is the actual author but he would prefer to stay away from the spotlight and let one with lesser knowledge (me) and trashy doubles (me, again) get some attention.

Books are being printed as we speak. Next week I depart for caribou hunting in the northeast corner of Alaska and should return about 9-3. I'll be taking my .450-400, of course. Upon my return, I will make a separate post asking you all your opinions of a quarterly digital magazine on double rifles. So, start thinking…..
Cheers, all.
Cal
