Chris: is this Michael Richter?

This is a picture of Michael Oke.

While engravers can do a variety of styles, Michael Richter is the engraver well known for his bulino engraving (the elephant). Michael Oke likely completed the other components of the engraving project. Chris can probably confirm this for you when he sees this post.

Exactly. Most engravers have a specialty, and we often use more than one engraver for a given project. Oke did the scroll and Richter did the Bulino elephant on this one.

There are two problems for an engraver ;
He has to be mechanically able - dexterity !
He has to have the artists eye !

Of the huge number of paintings, drawings, engravings I've seen one problem seems to be common - for animals many don't seem to know the animal's anatomy ! If you are a hunter you get to know the muscles, and bones and you can properly show the animals no matter what position he's in .I'm only a basic engraver but I remember engraving a deer walking away from you but pausing and turning his head to look behind him .That took a bit of work with many sketches discarded !!
