An Engraving Pictorial - start to finish

FjoldThat's great! Can you show the tools used for the different cuts?
I'd love to be able to do something like that but unfortunately I was born without the hand-eye coordination gene.

NO.
This is my baby, my personal double.
:-)
I will make an film about the complete finishing of the gun, intervieus with the makers, the first hunt with it, pp.
In German: Vom Baum auf den Tisch.
...but it is not an "problem" to show some photos of it before, so post on Chris.
:-)
Best wishes.

I'm sure a world leader in classy double rifles will rest easy at night knowing you feel their engraving is "pretty good."
Can you show us the engraving on your double so we all can see an example of fine or perfect engraving, please?
Cal

DCS MemberChris,
Can you provide an idea of how many hours between certain phases? I'm amazed by the artistry.
I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

CHIPBChris: is this Michael Richter?
22 January 2015, 08:35
ExpressYourselfThis is a picture of Michael Oke.
While engravers can do a variety of styles, Michael Richter is the engraver well known for his bulino engraving (the elephant). Michael Oke likely completed the other components of the engraving project. Chris can probably confirm this for you when he sees this post.

new_guyExactly. Most engravers have a specialty, and we often use more than one engraver for a given project. Oke did the scroll and Richter did the Bulino elephant on this one.

Fallow BuckGreat work.
Is there a reason the two sets of scrolls on the base are different?

ExpressYourselfWas it the English scroll combined with the leaf-arabesque contrasts that caught your eye?

meteThere are two problems for an engraver ;
He has to be mechanically able - dexterity !
He has to have the artists eye !
Of the huge number of paintings, drawings, engravings I've seen one problem seems to be common - for animals many don't seem to know the animal's anatomy ! If you are a hunter you get to know the muscles, and bones and you can properly show the animals no matter what position he's in .I'm only a basic engraver but I remember engraving a deer walking away from you but pausing and turning his head to look behind him .That took a bit of work with many sketches discarded !!
