Other than being beautiful, and seemingly small, it has absolutely no engraving on it at all, and has a true splinter fore-end

I was going to say it looks smaller than others.

Smaller thinner fences ?

Is this the small action ?

Good eye, Emory!

Notice how breaking that edge on the top of the action also allows the side panels to be smaller?

How is that going to make the side panels smaller? The wood? That isn't going to make two pounds of difference!

It looks like less stock drop but I may be dreaming.

You can "see" it.

It's not an exact copy of a Rigby, but there are 5-6 distinct characteristics and measurements that make a stock look and feel "English." We've incorporated them / duplicated them into this stock.

Individually, they are subtle.

Collectively, make a world of difference - not only in the look but also in the feel.

The bet I had was with one of our stock makers. He was of the opinion that most guys wouldn't be able to notice the differences; I said they would.

Chris,

Of course you can see it, it looks like a double rifle is supposed to look. Little more open wrist, and likely points better.
Worthy improvement.

Many Thanks

The straighter the grip the better. Engraving or no I like the looks of the Heym the best. They do any excellent job of mimicking English guns.

The first word that came to mind was elegant.

It would be interesting to follow this action through the progresion to the finished product.

Do post pics of the progress it goes through. It would be fun to watch it morph into the final product.

Kind regards,

Carpediem

Yes, it IS.

On shoe-lump barrels, each barrel is one, uninterrupted tube from breach to muzzle.

The lumps and the mating plate that fits the barrels are machined from a separate piece of steel.

The lumps are wired and soldered to the barrels.

Excess flux and solder being removed.

After facing off the breach.

On chopper lump barrels, the lumps and the barrel are made from the same forging.

Chopper-lump barrels are available now too, but that is another announcement that has yet to be made. Wink

FIG #1
The above example is a drawing of a set of “chopper lump” barrels. Each barrel being forged, with half of the under lumps, and the quarter rib butt, integral to the barrels, looking sort of like a hatchet, hence the name CHOPPER lumps. These two are fitted together, with an amount of barrel convergence, by educated guess. They are then fluxed, and wired together, and brazed together at the first four inches or so, of the breech end of the barrels! Then a wedge is soldered in between the muzzles, and the full quarter rib is soldered in place, with an extension down between the barrels, to make a fore-end latch hook. Now the fitting of the barrels to the action can take place.
This is the type of barrel joining that is, most times, used on British double rifles, and is considered, by most purists, to be the only way to build barrels, and is very expensive, compared to other methods. Here I’ll let you decide the value of the chopper-lump barrels over other methods, but I’m not convinced that it is as great as some people think! Never the less you will pay a premium for a rifle with chopper lump barrels.

(Photo from Hallowell)
(Text is mine)
FIG#2
The above example is the so-called “PLATEFORM LUMP”, or “SHOE LUMP” barrels set. This barrel set is joined to a one-piece lump that is saddled to accept the barrels. The purists frown on this method of joining of barrels, but many very fine European double rifles are made this way, some with very high chamber pressure cartridges, seemingly with no problem long term! Rifles like HEYM, and MERKEL are made this way, and both are very respected makers, and there are others as well. In my opinion, this method, if done properly, is as good as it needs to be. I have double rifles made both ways, and have had zero problem from any of them. This method is cost effective, because much of the “HOG” work can be done by CNC machines. The final fitting has to be done by hand anyway, so it is not a strength, or quality killer.

Jorge, your new VC is a shoelump barrel set!

I am a big fan on the shoe-lump.
Fitting and technique are critical, and there is opportunity for artistic expression in the shape and line of the base of the shoe, where it runs along the action flats.

Years ago I built lightweight custom bicycle frames and forks, and would often use similar construction in steel fork crowns -- where the simple fitted silver joints would endure amazing forces, and will typically survive generations of use. A properly fitted silver joint is a lifetime component, and worthy of 'Best' designation in my book where applicable.

Cheers
Tinker
