As a reminder.
Also, if you're at the AGCA gun show the 14-15 of this month, stop by my table.

Double Rifle Shooters:

Important change and update.

Birchwood has canceled our shoot as they are hosting an event and won't allow us to shoot on May 5th. Rather than change the date as many have their tickets and time planned, Rob and I looked to the Mat Su Sportsman's Shooting Range.

Kelly, range officer, gladly accepted us to shoot on May 5th. Rob and I were there last evening (January 15) and what is there is an upgrade from Birchwood. We will have a 100 yard range to ourselves with nine tables, use of the restrooms, and a large meeting room to chat and have lunch, show our firearms, have a "for sale" table, etc.

From what we saw Rob an I agreed this is the place for our yearly shoots.

On May 5th, the range is hosting an official competitive shoot so we are limited to our 100-yard range and the meeting room as all of the other areas will be under use. We can access the rest rooms.

Directions:
Mile 38.5 Glenn Highway in Palmer. Two miles south of the fairgrounds.

I will email all of you gents and please acknowledge the email so I know you are aware of the change of location. I will also update on the three forums I post on: Accurate Reloading, African Hunting, and Nitro Express (all .com).

Rob, myself, and some of the regulars will arrive at half 8 to 9am to set up and we will begin shooting at 10, lunch at noon, and resume shooting at 1 and continue to do so until our shoulders give out.

I would like to collect $10 from each person to pay the range rental fee. If any money is remaining, Jim and Joyce will be reimbursed for their food. (Note: Joyce is the only woman on the planet who shoots a 4-bore so be very nice to her!)

Thanks for your understanding and, believe me, this location is a step up for us.

Cheers,
Cal

I wish I could be there. I still have this odd fascination with these things, despite having only shot two of them.

I have this huge house project that I have been sinking all of my time and money in. I hope to finish it in 60 days and reset the fun fund to acquiring a double.

Almost here. I started loading 25-20 and 4-bore ammo last night, opposite ends of the spectrum for sure.

Cal,
In Anchorage and ready to go!!

Is the start 9am as in your message or 10 am as per earlier messages? I am good for either.

I have called Matt Brody and left a message to see if he needs a ride. I can certainly pick him up.

You certainly have some cool ones. I also hope everyone has a safe and fun day. I will be celebrating the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby with food and booze.

A big thanks to all of the wonderful people who made this a great day, especially our cooks!

As always I got to meet some really interesting people, shoot some interesting guns, and learned a few new things. I'd never even HEARD of a WR Monkey Tail, and I got to handle and fire one, How cool is that?!

I'll post a few pictures tomorrow after cleaning a few more rifles. Thanks again to all who came out.

Bob

I will a bit late in posting as my pics didn't come out that great. For my pickup tail gate party, from right to left is: 4 bore, 8 bore, 10 bore, 12 bore, .600, .500, .450 no2. .450-400, .350 no2, .500 bpe. Missing is a .577 bpe and a .577 Snider howdah. (They were on the shooting bench).

Thanks to all whe brought rifles and to those who just showed up to partake in the fun. Joyce and Jim provided a priceless service in their cooking skills. The regulars brought chips and drinks. Steve Harley from the UK collected money for the range fee. Hey, where else can one shoot fine doubles and eat musk ox stew?

I hope many more from AR will join us for next year's shoot. Some out of staters fly up, shoot, and fly home. Others take in the sights and see the air show, fish a bit, drive the highways, and two gents staying at my place will take a flight seeing tour around McKinley and ride the AK Railroad.

The nice thing about this shoot (albeit it is a long trip for southerners) is seeing the AK scenery and lifestyle. All are welcome, we do our best to privide rides and places to stay for visitors. Next years we may give the "Shootaway Award trophy" to the best and most accurate double rifle at the shoot!

Cheers to all of you gents. It is a pleasure.
Cal

The smallest (70 and 75 grain .257" bullets over 12.4 grains of AA1680 for +-2000fps) and largest (1500 grain balls over 100 grains of Blue Dot for 1525fps) bullets I shot. I brought a few 2000 and 2133 grain conical loads for the 4 but better judgement prevailed and we decided the roundballs were fun enough.
