The ones made by Dick Murray are very nice. So are the ones sold by Chris Sells but I am not sure if they are available off the shelf, Dick's are.

I prefer the closed loops. Sometimes over time open loops will expand and fail to hold the cartridges securely. Others like the open loops since they say they can push the cartridges up from the bottom. The good news with Dick Murray's holders is that the loops are elastic, representing the best of both worlds.

I like the belts and or slides from Dick Murray as well. He lives just down the road from my house and I've dropped in a couple of times. His products are first rate and if he doesn't have what you want in stock, he'll make it for you.

Personally, I like the open loops. I like the ability to push the cartridges up from the bottom and I never have to worry about the (closed) loops getting too loose to hold the rounds as they stretch. When that happens, with the open loops, just push the rounds further down into the loops. I've had too many rounds fall out of the closed loop type.

I don't always agree with Todd but in this case open loops are the only way to go. Not only can the cartridges be extracted more easily but both a pull and a push, but the closed loops pick up and hold water, dirt, and mole shit.
So, Todd, old mate, I'm with you on this one. However, I will leave you to your Blasers and admiration of Shootaway.
Cheers, gents.

Cal, somehow I think you got the wrong message from that Blaser/shootaway comic thread. In reality, I'm not sure which of the two I DESPISE more!

Just to be clear on the matter ... One is a totally useless Piece of S&*T. The other is an absolutely ugly rifle! barf

Other than that Cal, I really can't remember us disagreeing on anything except the use of proper flat nosed solids in double rifles. beer

I brought a double and a bolt gun on my hunt as well. I purchased a 2" belt from Murray and four 10 round belt slides from him. 2 leather for my double and two 2 elastic for my bolt gun. 10 solids and 10 softs in each for their respective rifles. When I grabbed a different rifle I slid off and on new slides..

There is a lot to be said for open loops no one likes mole shit on there solids...
To cure stretched leather loops I am under the impression that a soaking in water or alcohol will be the cure, but this is a question better asked of Dick Murray.

Yes, that will tighten them up for sure. Trouble is, when you're in the field and a round or two falls out of the closed loop due to stretching, what do you do until getting back to camp that evening to tend to the loops? Put the rounds in your pocket? With the open loops, a bit of water back at camp followed by a drying session will also tighten them up, but while in the field until you can tend to them properly, just push the cartridge further down into the loop to hold it securely. Remember that even a "straight walled" case such as the 500 or 577 is tapered to some degree. Pushing them down further into the loop tightens the grip on the cartridge.

Funny how we'll nit pick this crap to no end isn't it. 26" vs 24" barrels, ejectors vs extractors, bolt vs double ... the list goes on and on! Big Grin

Good thing there are some absolutes though ... such as shootaway being an Ass Clown!

I have hunted small game for years with a 12 gauge closed loop leather shot shell belt and never had a shell fall out.I like it when you push them down and they stop and are all even height.
We would put bees wax snow seal on the leather and warm it up so it was absorbed.Walking through the waist high dew soaked weeds would really dry up unprotected leather. This way the belt would last forever and still no shells fell out.Now if you turned the belt upside down and shook it I am sure they would fall out.I am glad my Lott belt was hand made using quality leather and the loops were sewn around my ammo for a snug fit to begin with.

I to like the ammo carrier from Texas Hunt Co. The benefit is you can close it and the ammo stays secure and when you get to where you may need to reload you can open it and it is a secure platform to load from.

True this isn’t a traditional style belt but I think it works better.

I like Dick's closed nylon version, and have also used a Tex Hunt Co. slide on that belt. Good stuff all, but I still preffer to have two on my right wrist, in that I load with my left hand. Hunting tuskless around large cow herds will do that to you. Mine is homemade nylon, but I recall brother Jines had a nice leather wrist band.

That's actually not far off the mark! I purchased a leather culling belt from Cabelas, really not sure of the brand any more as it's been awhile. Got damed tired of loosing rounds out of the top of the loops, even with the wetting and drying method as they would continue to stretch during each outing.

So I took a box cutter to the bottoms and opened them up. If you look closely at my 500NE belt, you'll see the bottom line is crooked from my hack job. One of these days I'm going to clean up that belt and make it look proper. But for now, it works and works well. One thing I have begun doing however, and this goes along with my theory of cutting as much weight as possible on those long, hot tracking jobs of late season, but which also helps tremendously in speeding up reloading the double, is to place two rounds, skip one, two rounds, skip one, etc. This gives me 10 rounds on the belt plus two in the chambers and separates each reload from the next on the belt.

Here's a pic of that belt loaded:
