I realize this is relative to the individual gun but what would you suspect the average weight range to be for a 450 3 1/4 double with 26 inch barrels? ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141

I owned two that were 11 1/2 each with 28 inch barrels. Definitely go with the 26 inch tubes and 10-10.5 as those 28 inch tubes made the rifles ungainly. Dutch

From what I understand the cartridge should have similar recoil to a .375 or even a little less felt recoil due to the lower recoil velocity. Why is a a rifle a pound or so heavier than most .375 bolts at 10-10 1/2 pounds being recommended? Regards, GH

@ 26" barrel length it should be about 10-10.5. The 450 NE is the cartridge that all other NE are measured by. Are you thinking about taking the plunge? To answer your question, "Yes, I think JOyce will be tired at the end of the day from carrying this rifle." AKMatt

To answer the posted question, the .450/3 1/4" (same ilk as the .470, .450 #2, .500/.465 etc., that being 480-500 grain bullet moving at 2150+/- FPS with about 5000+/- Ft. # energy) should weigh 10.5# minimum and up to 11.25#. End of story. I believe the doubles should be 24" to 26". When having new guns made, I generally "split the baby" and order them with 25" tubes. GWB I am wondering where you came up with this idea. I can duplicate that load in a light rifle for you to try. Yes it is a bolt but the dynamics are the same. 480 gr bullets at 2150 out of a rifle that weighs 8.6 lbs will get your attention. I have a 375 that is about the same weight and is no problem with 300 gr bullets. I think 10.5 with out scope and 11.5 or so with scope is just right. You can shoot fast and maintain control. You will also practice with it so you can hit what you are shooting at. Perhaps you are thinking of the 450-400. That would be ok at 9.5-10 lbs I think Don is right on in his post. My Heym goes 10.5# with 25" barrels. I think it is about right as I wouldn't want it heavier, nor lighter. 450 3 1/4" isn't bad for recoil, but it isn't a 375 H&H either. HBH

How is it that a 450/400 or anything else has to have 26 or 28 inch barrels? If that looks cool in your book so be it but in the thick stuff outside of the gun vault it seems pretty impractical. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Will first off I agree that the extra 2 inches of barrel is,in fact, useless in practile balistic terms today. If the rifle balances it makes little difference byond a 2 inch longer sight radius. I think the 28, or even 26 inch barrels are nostalgia thing, that is a hold over from the black powder days when the long barrels DID make a difference. I have doubles with just under 24 inch barrels and at least on with 30 inch barrels, and all balance well. the 24 inch barrels are my favorite of the ones I have today, but I built two different doubles with 20 inch barrels to carry following bear/lion dogs. Both built on a Browning BSS action, one chambered for 30-30 Win, and the other for .41 Rem Mag , and for that purpose they were perfect! It is therefore only a matter of choice as long as the rifle regulates well, and fits the owner's purpose! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

The 450 3.25 inch is on par with recoil of a 458 win, 450#2. I do not believe it is in the 375 class and maybe you are thinking of a 450/400 and the recoil of the two would be close. weight 11pounds Mike

My 450No2 has 28" barrels. I carry extra ammo in a Murray buttstock shell carrier. Weight is 11 3/4 lbs... The rifle handles perfectly, I can shoot it like a 22LR. It is a little longer, and a little heavier than many modern 450 class rifles, but many Modern 450 to 470 rifles are to light IMHO. I think a 450/400 should be 10 to 10 1/2 lbs. A 450 or 470 10.5 to 11.5lbs. Properly balanced of course. Of ALL the Modern, New Made doubles I have handled and shot, the Heyms are, by FAR the best handling, best made. Let me add that in a 450/400 I prefer 26" barrels, and they work great for 450 and 470 doubles as well. I personally would prefer 27 or 28" barrels over 24" barrels. One thing to consider as you get older, like ME, it is much easier th see the front sight on a 28" or 26" barrel vs a 24" barrel. I have done a lot of elephant and cape buff hunting in really thick stuff, with my 28" 450 No2 and not found it to be too long. I have shot cape buff as close as 12 yards, and several elephants under 6 yards. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

The 450-3.25 is in the same class as the .470, with a 480 or 500 gr. bullet at 2150 to 2200 FPS, the .470 has the advantage of a 47 caliber cross section as opposed to a 45 caliber cross section of the 450-3.25..Not much but 47 caliber cross section is definately bit better IMO.. Barrel length is what feels and points best to you..I have always liked 26 inch barrels but I had a 20 inch 450-400 that felt great and shot great, I loved that gun. As to whats handy in the bush, thats an old wives tale that hangs on like a tick on a dog...You never know where the interfering limb is when you are creeping on a buff or rabbit, it may be 10 inches out there and interfere or it may be 28 inches, you have no way of knowing prior to the moment of truth! I have hunted the thickest Jesse with both and you cannot tell any difference, in fact I have never had the bush interfere with a shot in over 60 years of hunting, I guess I must know where my barrel is when I look down it. BTW a 26 or 28 inch barrel on a double or single shot is about the same length as a 20 inch barrel bolt gun or there abouts. I have heard no complaints about a 20 inch bolt gun for brush.. Bottom line barrel length its all about how it points and handles for you. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
