tomo577mac, they are screwed into the rib, but i can't remember if the rib was cut for them.

the gunsmith didn't cut the top rib for the mount bases.
if someone wanted to remove the scope completely the bases could come off and the holes filled with plug screw just like on your bolt rifles.
and the complete mount set -up could be put on another rifle or combo & maybe even a drilling.
sometime in the 50's heym offered pre-fit claw mounts for bolt rifles.
they were all fit up , blued and ready to be screwed onto your rifle. both rings fit onto the center tube, which is the only way americans know to mount a scope
why the germans won't do that pre-fitting today beats me ! so we shut up and pay for individual fitting.

I just blame it on the rest of the DRSS drinking their Hot Tea, flavoring it with a pinch(about 6 onces) of scotch, the smell giveing me a contact high!
