Has anybody actually got one mounted on a double ?

I like to fit this to my trusted Merkel boxlock

I also want to retain the option of using factory iron sights when removed

If you are curious I enjoy hunting hippos on land which invariably means shooting in relatively low ambient

light condition

I know aimpoint make a double mount for merkel

If you have fitted one how much higher does it raise the mount from the iron sight axis ?

I shoot my double like a trap gun and very conscious of cheek pressure

On a double rifle, I prefer the Doctor Optic, on a QD mount over all others.

Nah, I'd just shove a 4-12 variable on the thing. Nothing looks better on a classic double than some lumpy optical new-age wonder totally at adds with the underlying concept. But for Christ's sake, whatever you do, don't use the purpose-built iron sights developed specifically for use with the rifle.

Wasn't there an old saying about tits on a boar?

If the Good Lord wanted such sights on a fine double he would have put them on starting in the 1870s.

Leaf and express sights only!

Follow up in the dark?

Heavy ivory bead "night" or "moon" sight. If it's too dark to use this, wait until morning.

This thread is akin to putting Rosie O'Donnel's face on Raquel Welsh's body. Uhhhhhhhh. That means it's a two bagger. Put a bag over her head and one over your head in case hers falls off!

Cheers, gents.

Andrew that's exactly what this was for

At least I was hoping

I was with Thor sitting out for the hippos by Munyamadzi with by double

Couldn't seethe front sight at all

I did bring a bottle of luminous face paint that's kids use for party face painting and it worked well

A dab on the front bead And rear leaf did the trick

I have been pondering since my return and came across an adaptor aimpoint made for Merkel and nothing else

I have been practicing shooting in ver very low light with the aimpoint and blue tac and I am confident this is a practical solution

I have ordered the mount and it should be here next week

It has virtually no eye relieve and one will be hooting with both eyes open with no loss of DEPTH

Perfect for CQB n the bush

Ok chance of losing zero

So its either that or no seeing the front sight and snap shooting by instinct

Regards

Looking forward to meeting you n the ground one of these days

I have an old Westley Richards Catalog from the 1800's that shows several of their double rifles with scopes on them.

I also have some old catalogs from the same time that show flashlight mounts for rifles...

No one likes change, but change happens. The first "holo" sight I saw on a double was at Champlin Firearms in JJ's shop. This was 15 years ago. I thought it was an abomination. Until I picked it up and saw how quickly you got on target.
Today I have a Fastfire 3 on my vintage British double rifle. My eyes like it a lot. The image changes intensity according to the background it is against.

I am guilty of that line of thinking. I always felt that red dots on doubles was a bit of an abomination as Cal says. But I tried a Trijicon and a Docter Optik and both have really improved my shooting. The shooting improvement notwithstanding, for hunting I think I will pull them off. For me I found that it was just one more thing to worry about, e.g., is the battery still good, have they been knocked out of alignment, are they dirty, etc. In keeping with the KISS principle I will probably go back to using irons only for hunting. But even an old dog can learn new tricks, I did.

For me, the choice is simple.
Leave my double as is and let it stand in the gun safe, or use the FastFire and do what I really like to do, shoot my double! Most of my rifles wear a scope or holographic sight. Just a fact of life. My old eyes need help and I like to shoot.

You need to do what you feel is best. I did!

Besides which, crappy shooting means nothing at 20m. See you soon.

Ian, my rifles will remain as they were made. However, should I disappear on my hunt with you, and they you begin hunting with a .600, Mike will come after you as he is the beneficiary in my will. See you in about 9 days. Two buff on ticket so I'll bring two cartridges.

I think I am looking forward to holding that rifle as much as the hunt.
