Well I picked up my Rem SPR 22 30-06 on Thursday. I spent almost four hours on Friday fitting the forend to the receiver. The fit where the curve of the forend meets the receiverr was so tight that the latch would not close.I lapped the radius until it fit. The ejector was so tight that the action had to be opened over my knee and forced closed.I cleaned rust out of hole where the ejector rod goes and freed it up some.
I went to the range and used Remington ammo 180gr Corelocks. After 2 shoots the action was hard to open and the primers were set back. I tried Federal Classic 180gr Hi Shock SP. The results were the same except the primer set back was not as bad.I believe this is because Fed pimers are harder than Rem.When I got home and inspected the cases more throughly I noticed that the shoulders had moved forward.
I tried a no go gauge in both chambers and the rifle closes on gauge. I believe the cambers are long.
I am going to call Remington on Monday. I will post more when I hear from them.
Dave

I also had very simmalar problems with mine. Hard to open and the safety stopped working. Mine had primer pucker marks around the firing pin. The firing pin holes were over sized.

Mine was one of the very first to come to Canada and was a Baikal. I sent it in for repair but the store I was dealing with screwed up and Baikal got it back not knowing there was anything wrong with it.

Yours is the 2nd one I have heard of having problems, mine being the first, wich became internet legend and often over exagurated.

I could have lived having to fit the extractor and forend, but I am really concerned with the headspace problem. I know I didn't buy an H&H but did expect it to work safely.

Are the chambers cut to deep causing exess head space or the action springing causing the exess head space?

Put your no go gauge in, close the rifle and hold it up to the light looking for a gap between the action and bbl. OR take your extractors out and see if the no go gauge is flush or proud of the edge of the chamber.

You should've returned it, not filed on it. If you still can, do so. Go buy a used Chapuis for $4K

I contacted Remington and they are going to send me a return label.I used the PH# on thier website to contact them. The PH# that is in the owners manual was answered by European American Armory and the extension told me it was full and I could not leave a message. Dave

What a drag-

Have you evaluated the rifle in respect to whether or not it's tight on face?

I wonder if the first couple of rounds blew it off face.

Also, Dave I think that Showboat was suggesting that you should make sure that the rifle does not appear modified in any way when you return it to the factory, and that if there are any obvious marks left on the rifle from your fitting exercise, you should do everything you can to blend them with the original finish so that Remington doesn't have even the slightest chance to refuse to honor the warranty on the grounds that you somehow modified the rifle.

If that's not what you meant to say Showboat, I apologize for putting words in your mouth.
Further, Dave if that's not what Showboat meant to say please note that it is what I'd say, and I recommend that you do whatever it takes to make that rifle look 'just like it did when it came out of the box' if you want Remington to make good on the warranty.

I explained to the rep at Remington exactly what was done. His response was that what I did would not change the chamber and they would fix it.I do not believe the barrels are off face as the case is slightly deeper in the chamber than it should be

So far, I must be a legend, because I am the only guy who got lucky and got one that works. Barrel spaced shots side by side at 50; with family issues, etc. still haven't got it out to see what it will do at longer ranges.

The one difference: I paid attention to others comments, and have put nothing through it but Remington Managed Recoil rounds. A compromise to be sure, but what the hell, I'm enjoying it, it was cheap, and for what I'll carry it for, now I can keep the pretty Chapuis in the safe on rainy days.

Mine shoots barrel distance apart at 50yards
but they cross. I'll take care of that when I get the chamber issue settled. I bought mine for same reasons you did. It was inexpensive
and I won't be worried about bad weather. I will try the managed recoil ammo Dave

Heck, a lot of people pay good money to get an 30-06 "improved" and you got one from the factory!

You should have backed the fl. sizer die out so it didn't push the shoulder back, and used handloads in it as an "improved" cartridge! lol

They told me that they were replacing my rifle and had ordered one from Remington. No approx deliver date was given. I'll let you know when I get it. Dave

I called Remington on Thursday July 3 to find out if EAA really ordered a rifle or was just bsing. Rem said they would call back later or on Monday as Friday was a holiday. They did not call back. I called them on Monday and they could not tell me if EAA ordered the rifle because they(EAA) can't place an order for something Rem does not have. EAA also informed me that they would not send the replacement to me.They would only send it to a dealer.Iasked them who would pay the transfer cost and they said we will work something out.I can't wait to see what something is.

Sorry to hear that you guys are having trouble over there.

In Australia we've had them for a while and I know of three (2x30/06 & 1x308 all sxs) which have functioned flawlessly from day one. The 30/06 is used weekly on the Sambar deer here in Vic and has a few kills under its belt already.

Maybe the fact that we are getting all the guns as Baikals instead of Remington has something to do with it. Don't know.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Michael70-

I think there would be good value to this thread if you could get into contact with the owner/shooters of those Baikal SxS rifles, find out what ammunition they're running through them, and post it here on this thread.

Just a thought, but it appears ammunition might have something to do with how these rifles do...

Hello All,

RE: SPR 22. The 24 Hr Campfire forums has quite a discussion about the Remington/Baikal double 30-06 "project rifles" too. The low price makes them attractive but from what I'm hearing I don't think I want to take a chance on buying a "New in Box" project rifle. Are there any U.S. gunsmiths out there who might care to give their opinions on professional clean-ups for the SPR 22 rifles? I wouldn't mind spending a few extra dollars to have one inspected and tuned before taking delivery. Is it possible to own one of these rifles in perfectly reliable condition for under $1000? (I'm basing that estimate on the list price, not the auction house price)

Cheers,

Bob

I got 1 in. It looks OK but it has a $979.00 price tag. I'm not sure if it will be a good shooter or not. This one is on the shelf for sale.

They are a SHOTGUN! We in Europe are well familiar with the Baikal for twenty plus years and all its faults and advantages. Except ours were communist USSR made. So actually they were rugged, made with good materials, and worked.

But that action is a shotgun action with rifle barrels fitted. It isn't a designed as a double rifle from scratch action. So no matter what it is a SHOTGUN.

A good basic shotgun but to fit rifle barrels to it I just would not. Also I guess in post-communist Russia there isn't the cheap labour available for hand fitting of the parts.

Well I called Remington and asked when they would get in more SPR22 rifles.I was told maybe
Sept, maybe Oct,maybe.I asked about getting a refund and was told it had to come from EAA.
I called EAA and was told they only replace guns no refunds. I was told to contact Rem or the dealer I purchased it from for a refund from them.I said you have the rifle how can anyone else give me a refund. My call was transfered to another extention with a voice mail. I never recevied a return call. I called Rem and explained the problem again.Rem said they would call back.Rem returned my call and asked me to send a copy of my sales receipt.EAA was sending the rifle to them and when they got the rifle they would send me a check I hope this is the end Dave

Well, finally got mine back out to the range, and after a box of Managed Recoils, got approximately minute of grapefruit at 100. Right barrel around 1 inch high and to right of center, left barrel around one inch low and left of center. Not perfect, and maybe I could diddle around and improve it some, but more than good enough for the quick thick close range shooting around here. So far, I am one of the lucky ones. I am quite pleased with mine.

Is the action a trigger plate type. I was wondering if anyone has had the triggers out of one of these things yet?????? Has anyone scoped one? I think it has a narrow rail on the barrel ribs but thought it could be tapped and a regular base of some sort attached????

If they shots are crossing at 50yds. would a higher velocity round make them converge farther out?

The barrels are ajustable. There is a jacking screw between them. I hope you got instructions I didn't. I would think a lesser velocity would keep the bullet in the barrel longer and move the point of impact right or left. I know on my 45-120 double if I try to go to fast they cross.

I don't have it yet but will check on the instructions. If I get a copy I will be glad to reproduce it and send you a set. More Barrel time might cause the cross farther out.

a lot of them are shotgun actions, also from the euro makers the action are a shotgun forging.

that dont make them unsafe or bad.
