Yes, the book is very good, in that it fills a huge gap in the gunsmithing literature. It's real value is that it will get you thinking about ways to do things, not necessarily Ellis Brown's way, although his methods obviously result in a perfectly serviceable DR.

Prior to my acquiring his book (at the time the AUD exchange rate was at it's worst, I might add! That hurt!), I had only Harold Hoffman's e-book in .pdf, and the Ellis Brown text certainly kicks that into touch! Big Grin

Marrakai,
can you tell me a little more about the e book? I have not heard of it. I know mr. Brown and have shot the rifle shown in his book, its neat stuff. I have his book and enjoyed it, I may do things a little different on my first double build. I have collected all the parts to build a 12 bore double rifle on a 10 gauge jones underlever action. It should be fun.

i've got it.. started the build (it's shooting, needs to be regulated.. had it about 4 inch at 25 and then put the project up).

his mill needs new spindle bearings, if you look at the bored holes in the pictures..

you CAN build a double, more or less just like he did...

the section on regulation is weak, IMHO

action selection is good

all in all, it's a good place to START from, though you could complete a build following it...

my advice, though, is that unless you are building a 500+, use a great 16 ga action, not a 12... better would be a 20, due to weight

I have Mr. Ellis's book, and it is a fine start, and as Marrakai says it tells you more than any other book on the subject that I'm aware of. Still, there are some things in his methods that leave a bit to be desired. But, also as Marakai says, reading the book will give many ideas of better ways to do this.

Alos, as Jeffe says his explanations of regulation, and his method of manipulating the barrels are a little crude, and makes the job of regulation harder than it needs to be!

Worth the asking price, however! beer

I knew someone would ask!
Harold Hoffman's Action Publishing site is here:
http://hppublish.com/index.html?lmd=39097.302928

Go to the 'Other Gunsmithing' page and select 'Double Rifles'.

Please read my previous post carefully! If you already have the Ellis Brown book, you will not gain much from Hoffman's comparatively crude effort. I do not wish to be sued by the man, but the sample drawing he includes on his web-page of 'sleeving' is probably the best diagram in the whole book!

I should add that Mr Hoffman is probably a perfectly fine gunsmith and gunmaker, but the same cannot be said about his skills as an author and illustrator.

No stars. I'm not recommending it.

BTW, I must have got a deal because I paid way under the current asking price!

I have a Stoeger 410 taking a nap in the gun safe. It will become a 26" barreled .22 Hornet.

I guess I'd better buy that book? Eeker

Rusty,
I have a library of related stuff in addition to the multiple 3 ring binders I aquirred in different gunsmithing classes. Not all of it is about building double rifles. I have the above mentioned book, some documentation from Browing arms as to how they lay ribs, Handouts and articles written by Dennis Potter from one of his classes, the Alexander Grey book and many other texts related to the entire process. I think the Brown book is great, but I also am always looking for more new info.

I bought the book and really like it. It does have me looking at double shotguns all the time, and the safe is already too full.
In looking at new double shotguns, I think the Turkish Huglu looks like it would be a great place to start. Anybody know if they have been given the White Labs destruction proof test and where they held to?
The Chinese(made by Jing) 1887 and 97 shotguns were proofed up to 43,000 psi. I looked at my cheapo 12ga double coach gun and saw that it was made by Jing also. I wonder if it's as strong as the 1887?
I know it's an ugly gun and the wood work inside is terrible, but would it hold a 50-70 or 50-90?

six months ago, a friend bought a copy from Ellis. He is finishing up regulation on a 45-90. Each barrel shoots under 3" at 100yds with his load, the fun part is getting the regulation completed. Go to the range and shoot, go home and solder a little. Repeat!

I think that the idea of doing this is an outstanding idea. I am thinking of a double rifle on an action with the caliber selection being 45-70 or 45-90.

Bubba here, I went out and bought several hundred 45-70 cases, bullet molds and several different bullets back when Baikal was supposed to be importing them. Still waiting...
I talked to a gun shop back when to tell them what I wanted. A week later I get a call saying come in and bring your check book. They found a pair of the 45-70 inserts that had an excentric on the front for regulating and a locknut that fit the choke tube threads.
Exactly the same but totally different.
I don't know if they still have them there or not.
