I would do it if i needed to. Someone over here has a DR WITH A ghost ring and it works well. Yes, I would change the front sight if it is a blade to a post with a brass bead. .

No, it wasn't, but I know who you are talking about LOL !!! It was on an older English DR and worked really well. In fact, thinking about it, I have seen a modern DR with one on, just can't remember what it was. .

Mine works ok . it was a steel replacement for milatary style surplus. I can't remenber the co name. It was posted here before, do a search under my name. I had them send me one to my specs, I had them cut it short and drill two mounting holes. It was about 80 bucks for the sight and $50 to have the center rib of the rifle drilled and taped by a local smith. I would do what Rusty did for just a little more money and install a red dot instead of a peep. The peep is better than the Merkel's sights. A low powered scope or red dot is much faster. The disadvantage to hunting buff with a double is the lack of a scope to place your shots in low light or in heavy cover ( I have read that here several times so it must be true) The Nikon solves all those problems. The 30 mm nikon african in 1-5 with the illuminated retical (that is a dot in center of cross-hairs)is the one you want.. About $900 for the scope and what ever for the mounts. That would be the best of both worlds. You can shoot at 1 power both eye's open. It is faster than Irons with old eye's ( You have to send a few round down range to learn to be quick. If you are luckey the rifle will still regulate with the scope. I broke two dangerous game water jugs at last hoot and shoot in 1.5 seconds and was waiting for the second jug to hit the ground to fire my second. The set up is fast The first jug exploded nocking the second off the stand. 500gr woodleighs at 2150 are much to soft for dangerous game water jugs, I am useing solids next time! Depends on how much cover. Last week I commented to my mate that I would have preferred open sighted DR or BA Rifle than the 4x Scoped Rifle I had. In all occasions but whacking a small pig from a mob on the run at 90 yards, I would have taken an open sighted gun anytime. I find scopes a hindrance under 100 yards except in the open plains. .

500N I did also, until I made up my mind to realy work on it. With my 57 year old eyes the 1x -4/ 5 power is the way to go. The stock has got to fit for everything to work. You shoot with both eyes open. The only thing that is faster is to shoot instinctive (looking over the sights)with a rifle that real does fit well, past 10 or so yards accuracy get sloppy. You have to shoot a lot to learn how and to maintain the skill. JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

500N not enough paractice with the scope. One who is good with the scope has no trouble getting on or hitting the target. I find it is much easier to hit with awell mounted low power scope then with a peep or iron sites. I also found that even at higher power it can still be fast. It is all in getting the scope mounted on the rifle at the right height and eye relief. Most people mount their scopes too high and with the wrong eye relief. Then they don't paractice enough I have no trouble getting on flushing birds. Once you have it down you'll find that it is fast and very accurate even at close range. Ran many tactical rifle courses with scopes not much differants in time or hits at 1.5 or at 9x. It all in a well fitting rifle and scope combo and lots of shoulder time.

No problems hitting the targets ! Everything I shot I killed. (On both Buff, one of the bullets went through the heart). It is just speed of aquisition etc - Yes, the 4x Leupy was not the best (I prefer 1.5's BUT I have used that gun before and like it (An old Brno 602 in 375H&H). I am just so much quicker with a DR. Might be getting older, just might have been me this year as opposed to the last 10 years doing the same thing. Anyway, I ended up taking my WR 465 DR for a walk in the light green but didn't connect with any animals - the angry old bull I was hunting didn't like being hunted !!! .

By all means - faster and more accurate than express ones. Under good light condition and on clear target, those can hold out with 4x scope out to 100m (depends on your vision ofcourse). Some don't like them tho and prefer express ones.
It is entirely upon you and the rear sight. If you like the blade and are used to it keep it, however most of rear sights come with elevation adjustments only, therefore you need to take care of horizontal adjustment and I guess the only place to do it is on front sight, so probably some modifications will take place anyway. Pick your front sight upon your vision - smaller/thinner is more accurate. If you'll pick bead - file it.
Ozhunter has dug out my post and you can see I (my gunsmith)'ve done it the custom way. You may find some parts here (I like this one): http://www.skinnersights.com/lo-pro_sight_7.html and more here: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx...Products/Rear_Sights Anyway I'd find someone who knows how to do it first and then proceed upon his/hers ability and ideas on.

My uncles woodward 450/400 has one made and installed by Woodward (ordered with the rifle.) A two appeture flip sight similar in principal to those fitted 20 years later to the No 4 mk1*. Big Ghost ring was sighted in for 400grn bullets and zeroed at 50 yards - and when flipped over to the small peep- it is sighted in for 300grn bullets at 150 yards. I of course, being a VRB have simply fitted a leupold red dot sight to my Krieghoff...they say it is like mixing Jonny walker Blue label and fanta- but what the heck- it works

I would say to go with the my folding ghost ring. If you have something that removes so something else can be installed, it may never make it back on the rifle. I can make it so it will lock when up so brush won't effect it. Folds down flush when not needed. ddrhook spoke fondly of a fiber optic front sight with a ghost ring at the show last weekend. Chris at Heym talked me into a Docter red dot on my Heym 450/400. JJ at Champlin will make the very minor cuts to the rib and Heym has a base which is easily installed and removed. The Docter sight is very compact and is a miracle for my older eyes. You will wind up with about $700 in the project but it is very fast and provides a positive sight picture in low light.

That Lo-Pro from skinner might be absolutely perfect to mount on my Sabatti since the center rib is already drilled for the weaver base that they sent with the rifle. I think it may be worth $40 to experiment. Worst case scenario the sight will end up on of my other rifles. Anybody know if those holes are 6-48 or 8-40? Doc, big bore double are for close in work on large animals. You should be able to put a bullet on the shoulder of an aninmal at 50 meters or less with the open sights. You don't need any gimmicks, especaiily one that might slow down your target acquistion. If you have a double, you need to learn to use the open sights. Being quick on the target with two shots is the principal advantage of a double. IIRC Finn Aagaard is reported(by Craig Boddington who participated)to have run timed trials, optical sights (incl aperatures)vs open sights. EVERYONE is said to have been faster with optical sights. Dave, You have obviously never used a large aperture ghost ring. It is so much faster and more easily acquired than shallow V express sights that they are not even in the same category. Especially when used with a square post white line front blade. No gimmick here just iron sights that are built for speed. The late great Finn Aggard in conjunction with Ashley Emerson did extensive testing with large aperture ghost rings and have proven that for a fast moving close range target that set up is the fastest iron sight there is. No two ways about it. I've shot both shallow vee and ghost rings extensively in the field and on the range. After you've spent some time behind a ghost ring you'll find a vee sight to be slow and cumbersome. Not to mention that the ghost ring with a proper front white lined square post installed negates all of the issues with poor eye sight making them useable for even the most geriatric sighted big game hunters.
