Not sure why I even calculated this but…. My Army Navy 450 3 1/4 cost 46 pounds in 1902 according to the ledger. I went to on online inflation calculator and found today's value of that 46 pounds then converted it to USD. $28,465 ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141

A suggestion? Value that £ 46 as gold sovereigns (the gold British one pound coin) and you get? A sovereign has a gold value of, generously £ 240. So 240 x 46 = £ 11,040. Now that is way cheap! Maybe another "vehicle" of comparison? Which would be a Purdey or Holland and Holland price, at that same date, for their sidelock ejector?

For what it's worth, my Jeffery 8-bore hammerless ball and shot sold for 35 pounds in 1896. A best grade version of the same gun was 65. The barrels were subbed out at a cost of 4 while Ellis Brothers made the rest for 20, leaving a not quite 50% mark up. I always find comparisons to today's costs interesting. Bob DRSS "If we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?" "PS. To add a bit of Pappasonian philosophy: this single barrel stuff is just a passing fad. Bolt actions and single shots will fade away as did disco, the hula hoop, and bell-bottomed pants. Doubles will rule the world!"

In my .600 book in the Jeffery ledger pages you will see the cost breakdown and markup of most .600s. Correct. This says one of two things. Either we are paying too much for double rifles today...or gold is very cheap in relative terms.

I HAVE EXPOUNDED ON THIS SUBJECT PREVIOUSLY!! I STILL THINK WE ARE IN A DOUBLE BUBBLE...AND I AM SEEING OLD ENGLISH DOUBLES COMING DOWN IN PRICE ON ACTUAL SALE PRICES...NOT ASKING PRICES! DOLLAR IS STILL VERY WEAK TOO. I THINK ENFIELDSPARES IS NOT TOO FAR OFF IN EXAMPLE IN REAL SELLING PRICE TERMS....FOR BOX LOCKS. DROPLOCKS AND SIDELOCKS ARE MAYBE 30-50% MORE AND BEST GUNS STILL UP THERE....BUT WELL UNDER $100k.... JUST MY OBSERVATIONS! CHEERS, 470EDDY
