73 yr old semiretarded Electrical Engineer, with 20+ years DOING electrical construction. Now working(?) 3 days a week correcting blueprints that alleged electrical engineers from NYC drew up. Have my own shop, so I built my own DR, a 45-100 on a Merkel 12ga frame. Took 3 months, and it still has the original stock, just nicer. Boar was the only thing that it bagged--but it was like The Fist Of God hit it. Getting to where the rifle building is more enjoyable than slogging through the woods.

I guess we are learning a lot about ourselves here. Good idea Cal.
I've noticed amoung other esoteric commonality there seems to be an inordinate number of pilots here.
I wish I could say that I found a woman that made happy enough to hang onto for many decades like most of you but my solemate has been a Supercub thats been with me now for 28 years.
3200 hundred hours PIC in her 3/4 of all landings off field.
I know of at least two more double/airplane owners on here who havent chimed in yet.
FWIW I have hung onto my current for going on 11 years.

I'm 44, pilot for 22 years (AH-1s back in the day), in AK for 17. Two kids at home, married 7 years. Bought my first double 9 years ago, now I'm up to seven, from 25-20 to 8-bore. I love rifles of all types but especially big ones and ones with two barrels.

Turn 51 in a couple of days.

4 years 11B in the 82nd, realized life span was measured in nano-seconds. Went back to school, then transferred into the Navy. 20 years naval intel CPO.

Two sons, youngest in Basic at Ft. Jackson just now.

Built 31 foot wooden schooner in my backyard in my thirties because I could not afford to buy one and nobody was offering to give me one. So, bought some plans, some wood and got 'er done.

Lived in the UK for almost 15 years teaching intel to US/UK/NATO/African partners.

Love deserts, off road racing and long distance overland journeys. Bought a Hummer H1 from a local shayhk in Bahrain and drove it back to the UK. I begged for forgiveness afterwards and the Navy paid me for the trip! Rally race the Hummer in Morocco and go to Tanz to safari with mates as often as possible (not hunt, just journey).

Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society.

Enjoying fooling around with my Baikal flanged ought-six. Rebuilding a Greener 450 nitro exress.

Love big dogs, big wines, good books and just one damn fine long legged woman with only one lapse in judgement (me!).

Sooo, if I'm in the process of buying a DR can I play? (*I'm very, very close to pulling the trigger on a Merkel 141 in 9.3x74r - as in days away...)

I'm 43, graduated the last time in '99 with an MBA in Bus-Ad. I sell software to hospitals (VP of Sales) in the revenue cycle space and have been a top 3 performer for the past eight years. I'm pretty much known as an over-achiever who never quits.

I have only been hunting for about 7 years but grew up around firearms of all kinds. I remember getting my first subscription to Guns and Ammo when I was about 7. I have fond memories of dog-eared pages and specs of long lost firearms...

Today I've been married for 9 years to the most amazing woman who not only enjoys my hobbies but also engages in them. She now has her own rifle, shotgun and pistols and joined me in Africa last year to take her own game!

We have two wonderful dogs (Tollers) who keep levity in our busy life and give us every excuse we need to fire up the FJ or Tundra and get out of dodge for the weekend. Desert Camping, Bird Hunting, whatever. A couple fine wines in the middle of nowhere under the stars makes for one fantastic evening.

I love the Art of a Fine Rifle and my wife has caught me looking at gun porn (aka, Luxus Walnut just for starters!) entirely too many times. There's just something about a fine rifle, it's engraving, the excellent wood choices and checkering that makes me sing.

I can't wait to carry my first double rifle in the fields of SoCal. dancing

Regards,

Robert

clap In my early 50's in Florida now, after retirement from law enforcement up north. Christian charitable work and donating provide the deepest, profound joy. (Amazing how great one feels when giving to others in a cause that's greater than all other causes, the Glorifying of God to the world.) My 20 something son just got a great career started with a company that's decided to double it's number of stores, and the whole collection of new stores will be in FLORIDA, so he'll be near me, the wife and my two younger kids who are middle schoolers. I like hearing about his work related life because he's really excited to be kicking off his strong looking career. It's really a happy thing for the family! The middle schoolers play sports and enjoy friendships and like to shoot and fish with me and the wife when she comes, which is regularly. I like all kinds of firearms and their shooting, and their mechanics, and ... The sub-categories undulate among themselves as to what's most exciting to me during a given season, but hunting rifles are always at the top or in second place. I also really enjoy salt water fishing, sailing, a bit of golf, riding bicycles with the family, travel when there's money for it, (NOT too often sadly) and I like being active on the internt forums of the firearms and fishing type.

On the down side my Mom's been hit with Alzheimers to a measurable degree now, and I'm trying to get my dad to move with her down near me and have mom reside in a residence that specializes in the exact type of care that she needs; it's only six miles from my home. Dad can live within minutes or miles of that same place, OR, he can live there too, the residence has couples doing that, (where one is afflicted and the other is not). This way my kids can see their Nana and Grandpa OFTEN and we can take her to the sports events, school plays and even on the boat for fishing and rides, (she's not bad physically at all for 73, but short term memory is really weak, and confusion comes upon her regularly). Dad's too heavy but he's got no brain function loss, so he can enjoy things once he's gotten my Mom's care fully in order. I'll ask you all to pray for our situation to stabilize. I'm guessing some of you have something like this in common with me.

This is a good thread Cal. Nice goin' !!!!!!!!!! clap

First Saturday in May is the Alaska doubel shoot. You're invited. Looks like you have some nice firearms. I have been selling off my collection--a few still to go. Midwest? I go to Kansas each April for turkey hunting.

I’ll play.

41, been in the restaurant industry for 24 years, and owned my own for ten years today (Bluegrass Pizza and Pub, in Danville Ky).

I taught for two years 2007/2008, beside that, the only other job I have ever had was guiding whitewater rafting all of the country in the summers when I was single.

First double was a Charles Daly 20 gauge that I was given by my dad in 1991 and still shoot quite a bit.

No double rifles yet, I am slowly saving for that.

Hi Cal, you must be really bored to start such a long and busy thread! But I will play along:

Older than dirt and so far, older than any others on this thread.
Born in OK but moved to Texas as soon as possible - raised in the Texas Panhandle (first grade through Jr College)
Hunting since BB gun and bought own .22 rifle and revolver as teenager. Dad gave us a 20 gauge Parker I have shot Parker doubles ever since.
Graduated UT (math, physics, astronomy) and went into computer programming at Graduate Research Center and was in software biz all career.
Now retired and living on a few acres in east Texas 50 miles from Dallas; I mow the property and watch Welsh Ponies eat the grass.

Late into double rifles and have and shoot only two- Simson Suhl .405 WCF and Beretta .45-70.
Other guns, I will not try to list, but 5 gun safes if you count closets and display cases. All in family own and can shoot hand guns, rifles, and shotguns; all hunt too.

Married once and for 50+ years ( must be OK because she still makes breakfast for me). We have a son and daughter close by.

Hunted Africa twice, Texas a lot, and other US states enough. I mostly hunt Texas though, largely because of the year round exotic hunting available. Even elk can be hunted year round as they are considered exotics here.

I win the youngest award on here I do believe, just turned 30. Went to gunsmithing school in CO around 19-21, then worked under/with a double rifle maker. My original intent for gunsmithing school was to graduate and work in the sporting clays area, with a bit of drive to be a double gun manufacturer. Ended up finding a home with double rifles and fine shotguns.

Outside of work my wife and I foster, have two now we hope to adopt, then get out. Hardest thing I e ever done. At that point my wife wants to be a CASA volunteer, and I’d like to put together a non-profit getting foster kids into shooting sports, hunting, and fishing.

I don’t own many, and everything is for sale! Did some trading for a Henry Atkin .450bpe that needs some work, a W.W. Greener 12bore, and Purdey 12bore bar-in-wood. Also have two pre-war German sporting magazine rifles, and a few modern boring pieces. I make up my lack of ownership of fine doubles by having other people pay me to shoot theirs...great gig.

Would love to get my pilots license before 40.

Only 32, but been bit by African Safaris and Doubles since a early teen.

Grew up dairy farming, became an Electrician, moved onto Powerlines and high voltage cable.

Own a 63 Pontiac Catalina with a 428 (rare to own in Canada) grew up going to the drag races with Dad, always enjoyed the early 60s cars and super stockers. Like old Harleys and Indians.

Always liked Doubles. Shotguns and rifles. I actually finally just purchased a 450 No 2 built off a shotgun action. I’ve been looking for years for the right .450 NE (I love the straight wall look) but I couldn’t pass this no 2 up

Been to Zimbabwe once, an absolute dream adventure, have a small family but I’m trying to figure out how to get back!

57 years young. Been a butcher for fourty years, the last twenty of those operating my own shop.
Married to the same woman for the last 37 years with 4 kids, and 8 grandkids.
Fly fishing in the summer, and bird hunting for eight months of the year. Up until this last year, I have raised and released up to 500 pheasants annually, releasing them for year-round hunting under shooting grounds permits to keep me and my dogs sane. Nothing is more relaxing than toting a fine english double over dogs and putting on the miles. Sharptails get the 12 ga treatment, but for the released birds, I find a nice 28 ga sxs is the ticket.
Doubles; J.W Tolley 577/500 no.2, Beattie 450 3 1/4 BPE, Searcy 470 NE., Merkel 140 470, merkel 150.1 9.3x74.
I am blessed to live in an area where we have everything from moose to antelope available for hunting, and bears to fill in the gaps. I have used double rifles for hunting moose, elk, deer, bison, and bears.

I'm with you. The service providers and bad guys know enough about us already and I don't feel like adding to the stuff they can cross-reference.

True and so far every biography is totally different. DR owners have nothing in common but the one obvious thing.

Almost 64. Born in India. Former Tea Planter in Assam. Career in management.

Used to ride a Royal Enfield and a Matchless 1954 - both single 350s.

Seen tiger and leopard in India. Charged by 3 cow elephants and escaped at less than 10 feet - in my early 20s.

Started with a home made guava fork sling shot at 5 - I still have it. Shot a few muntjack in India with an ancient Harrington & Richardson single.

In God's own NZ for 28 years. Married to one woman & 3 great kids.

I love Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles. Owned 3. Restocked 2 including this one

I am in...
65, married to my first wife, 3 kids, 4 grandkids

I am the guy that drills oil wells, have been for 40 years. Drilled in 20+ countries. Like New Zealand the best. Weirdest was offshore in the Caspian.

Am the least educated in my family, a petroleum engineer in a family of medical and legal folks

Wife and I are in our 18th house, moved everywhere due to the oil business.

Love to write, fish, hunt, teach the Old Testament

Interests are all over the place - was an amateur taxidermist, wannabe pro golfer, played college football and thought the Cowboys needed me (they did not).

Coached all sports - coached the first soccer game I ever saw. We won 25-23. I didn’t use a goalie.

Played college under 3 coaches who coached the NFL

Hate sheep hunting - but go every other year.... must be a mental thing

Founded two non-profits that were focused on conservation. Learned that most non-profits are “for profit” for the folks on the I side. Disillusioned when I read the financial statements of over a hundred of ones you know. Won’t keep me from helping the ones that are true to their cause.

Am a liberal conservative if there is such a thing

Love art but can’t draw

Love the beaches of South Carolina - Redneck Riviera

Love the USA but we need to change in many ways- can’t be the worlds policeman or protector, need to stop killing babies, need to let the Middle East sort out their own issues, need to detach from China and Saudi Arabia - they are not anyone’s friends. Most of all need to realize that people and countries only change when hearts change - from the inside out.

I must say the above post is about the best one I have ever read on the internet, or any other place!
The above author is an example of people who should be governing our country!
