Help! Turning 40

Hi, New to the sight. I have spent the past several says reading you guys info. I need a really good book to grasp it all.
Point of my post. Wanted a double as long as I can remember. My wife/4 kids/parents/inlaws are all going to chip in to get me a DR. I told them they cost about 40-50 new. I thought I would go for the moon. They didn't balk. I'm about 8 mos out. Please give me your best argument for make and caliber. I am giving myself a trip to Africa next year.

From what I have gleaned here, and elsewhere; one of the .45 caliber rifles is the most bang for the buck and usability.

If you want ENGLISH Made and BRAND NEW I urge you to speak to

TREVOR PROCTOR: www.ttproctor.com - he does it all except he

hires the same engravers as H&H use. For caliber it depends on the

number of elephant you'll go after. Four, five, more, go 500 NE.

One, two or three elephant and that's it, then it's buff, hippo and

what ever, 450/400 3 inch under 10 pounds, even if it's just a half

ounce under. Can't be sure about the elephant count, 470 NE will likely

be best for resale time, 450 NE allows for an endless list of bullets.

Before spending that much I would recommend some research. Check out Safari Press website, got lots of books. I'm sure you could get some recommendations from guys here as well. I'd even consider a trip to Champlin Arms in OK. They have a website as well and they are a fount of info. Good luck!

been reading about English DR. They seem to be the most classic and coveted. Obvious I have a lot of research to do. I want to get a cashiers check from my family before I buy. Not sure I trust them....I know them too well.

If you can, go to the Dallas Safari Club Convention or SCI Convention in Reno in January, and handle a wide variety from several makers. Heym, Searcy, as well as English doubles. There is the widest selection at these venues and since it is a large and one time investment this is what I would do.

Caliber, the 450/400 3" is hard to beat for Buffalo, Plains game and even Elephant, with the larger calibers being a bit on the more expensive side to shoot as well as dealing with the recoil

Searcy can put a talley rail on your barrels for a quick release scope and can build a second set of barrels to make a two caliber gun or even with a set of shotgun barrels for bird hunting

You don't say where you live but if it is in the USA, then with a budgit like that, I'd get down to Enid, OK to Champlin's and walk through his gun vault, and coon finger every thing ha had. He is a class act, and is the larges volume double rifle dealer in the world, and if you want a good double rifle he will put on one that you can depend on!

With that kind of budget you really have room to work!!!! There's a Wilkes .475 #2 on page 1 and a Scott .475 #2 BLE on page 2 that make my mouth water!!! The Army & Navy .470 BLE isn't bad either. Not to mention all the "extranious" Hollands and Westley Richards!!!!

Thanks for the help. Fellow mississippian has been a wonder. Plan on seeing some of you at least, at the Dallas SCI and the Texas shoot. Keep the info coming. I am keeping a book of sites and info that I can grasp. You guys are way ahead of me in ballistics. I'm a duck hunter by trade and looking to branch out.

Defintely take a look at Champlins, but don't overlook a new Abiatico & Salvinelli (Farmars) Webley long bar type actioned rifle.

If you even think about elephants, go with the 450NE 3 1/4" for a new rifle, or something between 450NE and 476WR for a second hand rifle. One problem is that you may not discover a hidden drive to hunt eles until you have feet on the ground in Africa - that's what happened to me. No elephants in your future? Go for a 375 or 450/400, either will work on an ele, but will be more versatile.

May I suggest for $40 - 50K getting two DRs?

Take the Wilkes .470 as the ultimate in awesomeness for $38K.

Then, as a truck gun to toss underneath the seat for pot shots at coyotes and crows, pick up .375 H&H for $8K.

I'm envious too, and shocked no one has mentioned the obvious. Get a new Searcy and then use the rest of the money to kill a buffalo with it. Enjoy the search.

hey,

I have been recommended to get a quality used rifle for a lot less and make sure that I like the caliber and style. Then look to get a new one. Seems to hold water. What do you think?

CD, your statement about getting a used double as your first one is spot-on. Why dump the money into the "gun of your dreams" before you've ever even tried a double, much less hunted with one. Like shotguns, fly rods, and magazine rifles, you will develop very specific likes among the many and varied features and brands. If the folks are willing to pool the money into your own "double rifle fund", then you can take it at your own pace. If you settle for a "first try" double, like a Chapuis, Merkel, Krieghoff, etc, who knows if the $40K will be available as you move towards your final choice. The lower-priced base models are also easier to sell to other "1st-time DR buyers" as you move up the quality/price ladder.

Butch Searcy www.searcyent.com will make you a FINE rifle for 20k, and the other 20K will buy you the safari of a life time.

Turning 40 is a good thing ... as the alternative from being 39 is NOT making 40

Oh lordy!!!!

I have yet to handle one, but what I hear over and over from a variety of sources is they aren't comparable to pre war or Paul Roberts/Pre US Rigby rifles. Not close. They tend to be heavy for calibre and the lines and look of them are anything but classic English. They also seem to be over priced due mostly to the Rigby name (not Rigby quality). Search for a recent thread around August/September about a new Rigby opening in England. In the thread there are a lot of comments about the California Rigby, El Rigbero, or Mexican Rigby (take your pick).

Martini and Hagn have a very nice 470NE in a ph model 88B Heym new in box for a very good price. I believe it is about 16,500 canadian. The rest of your money could be better spent on the hunt it self.

we are building them as fast as we can at the moment, and i will try to be better at posting pictures from the bench, i should be abel to show you a b-class medium caliber soon and we have 4 rising bites on the tabels right now, we are having a new website on the way, but everything is a matter of time and we try to focus most of that time into gunmaking.

i wish i could take the honor of that rifle, but as far as i can see, it is a prewar boxlock in very good condition.

we only make sidelocks with the prices starting from 10.000,-£ which should make around 16-17.000,- us$

i didnt know about the article until a friend told me about it.

but it is nice to have people who know about gunmakers work to give you the thumbs up about what you do.
