Who would be interested in a DRSS hunt here in Texas?

It seems like it has been a while since one was put together.

I would be interested as well! Rusty tried to put one together but the only dates they had at our regular ranch were over Mother's day, so we had to cancel it because nobody could get away on that date, for fear of the dangerous game in the household!

I'm not a "member" of DRSS, but would love to attend and fire off some doubles and I'll pay for ammo, of course.

Wade, the DRSS hunts we’ve had in the past were fun hunts that were mainly to get together and shoot our double rifles on moving targets on large low fence properties. So, mainly we shot a lot of wild boar, and had fun shooting on paper targets allowing everyone a chance to shoot several different double rifles of varying chamberings.

Most of the ranches in South Texas have hogs a plenty, and nearly all have exotics as well even in the low fence ranches. Exotics are common all over south Texas as they have been in Texas for near 100 yrs and many have escaped the high fence properties and spread to all good habitat. These DRSS hunts have been a lot of fun over the years, and I look forward to another one! Let us know what you have in mind!

Well dang, it looks like I started a wild fire!! haha

I'm thinking about two different possibilities:

1. A relatively inexpensive hunt for pigs with the option of adding other animals.

2. A more costly, but not unreasonable trophy hunt. I have a place in mind, which is a large high fenced ranch with a large herd of Water Buffalo (both bulls and cows available).

What are your thoughts on either? I'm open to suggestions....

Hopefully I'm done with rehab before the hunt is scheduled.

That's easy, just bring them both! I assure you there will be several double rifles there of all makes! Both chamberings will take hogs quite well if you do your part!

One thing we need to think about is, most ranches will have a minimum, and maximum number of hunters at any one time!

Right now it looks like there are 19 people interested, and I doubt most ranches will take more than 20 at any time, unless they have a very large acreage! The last place where we hunted limited us to 20, but they had 96000 acres with around thirty blinds and feeders. With 20 people it took three guides to run people to areas and pick them back up twice per day.

Just something to think about! coffee

Depending on the time of year, I have a developing interest. My .600 is, for me personally, the medicine guns for hogs.

I think a low pressure and fun hog hunt with several like minded gents would be nice and add the option for a trophy buffalo or what else is available.
Keep me in the loop.

Cal,

Problem is....that's not really an option. The two options I posted would be on two totally different ranches, several hundred miles apart.

I have a place in mind for the hog hunt, but it there are no Water Buffalo available there. However there are Elk, Bison, Aoudad Sheep, and a few others available.

Personally, I am really itching to try my .500 out on a big Water Buffalo....but I may just do that on my own time Smiler

Interested; please post dates, place (s) and price options. Let us pick one or both options, (should you decide that there is enough demand for two such outings and are inclined to organize them) based on those parameters.

I went to 2 of them several years ago down around Brady Texas. The first year we did it there was great. The second year it became more expensive then I can justify paying for to shoot a few hogs.

I have a few places here in north Texas about 1-1.5 hours west of Dallas where we could set up a DRSS hunt. For the guys who have to fly in for DSC this would be an advantage as you wouldn't be too far from the airport or DSC convention.

The place with the Water Buffalo is Champion Ranch. It is a large high fenced ranch (around 4,000 acres I believe) near Colorado City, TX (3.5 hours west of Dallas). Pricing for the Water Buffalo hunts are $4,500 for bulls and $2,500 for cows (all-inclusive 2 day hunt with guides, lodging, and gourmet meals). They also have 30+ other species of exotic game to choose from.

You can visit Champion Ranch's website here: http://www.huntchampionranch.com/

There are several places we could go for hogs, but the place I had in mind is operated/managed by a friend of mind. It is located near Normangee, TX (2 hours south of Dallas) and has several thousand acres of bottom land on both sides of the Navasota River. Prices for a hog hunt would around $900 per person for 2 days with meals, lodging, and guides (2 hogs per day). There are also two high fenced sections that are part of this ranch where they have Elk, Bison, Aoudad, Whitetail, Pere David Deer, and a few other species available for an extra fee. (*Note: the hog hunts do not take place inside the high fenced areas). There should be room for 10-15 people on this hunt, spread between 3 lodges on the property. One is a luxurious 4,500 sq. ft. lodge with commercial kitchen and the other are two smaller houses.

These hunts are coordinated by Texas Elite Outfitters, operated by CP Wade and Jeremy Shaw. Here is their website: http://texaseliteoutfitters.com/

I would be in for a hog hunt. Would it be possible to have a hunt prior to DSC and then another right after the Show? Sounds like there might be enough folks interested to set it up this way? Just a thought.

Larry, good point....normally there's not enough room between New Year's and the DSC to consider that, but this year the show isn't until January 15-18, so there's plenty of time.
