I met up with Mike Brooks and Omnivorous_Bob today for some double rifle fun. I shot a single barrel 4 bore, 2 8 bores, a 10 bore, a 9.3x74, and .450 3.25"! Good fun for my first time shooting doubles. I was impressed with the lack of recoil out of the .450 with full power loads in a 10lbs. rifle. The 4 bore was only loaded with 8 drams, but it kicked like a mule. I can't even imagine the full 14 dram load!!! Thanks again guys!

Yep it was a hoot! Shooting the four bore SS was a 'kodak moment' for Brett and myself. Imagine a rifle that you can drop a quarter down the hole and not touch the sides!
The 8's and the 10 are very nice too don't get me wrong but after all "Bigger IS Better!!"
I took some time to play alot more with my 'wanna be' DR. A JP Sauer shottie conversion to 450NE. The shots usually were side by side about 1 1/2" apart IF I managed to do my part.
The Chapuis 9.3 as usual was a pleasure to play with too.

When we do it again there'll be more show up I'm sure.

After everyone left I played with the Whitworth 375 and the CZ FS 9.3X62 and they did as good as the DR's.. A good day even if it was a touch chilly.

Brett, I think you may have me mixed up with our esteemed fellow member AKshooter. I know he's a DR guy too from his post about a recent bear he took with one.

I had a great time. It was good to start to get back into practice. Mike's rifles were definitely on the money too and I look forward to seeeing the new one. We'll definitely have to do this again with some more notice to get the word out when the weather gets warmer. I'm sure there's at least a dozen or two DR guys lurking around AK, and it would be a hoot and educational to try out each other's rifles.

Holly crap you aren't kidding!!! I'm worthless. I knew Rob Seymour, but thought he was Akshooter. And I thought you were Ray Brooks AKRay. Big Grin I'd think I was old and senile. The only thing I can say in my defense was I met you when I had ear filters and muffs on at the same time and I can't hear worth a damn anyways. Wow!!! Mike and Rob it was a preasure to meet you both and shoot your guns. When Gram gets in town we'll have to get together and I'll buy you a beer or two. I can't wait for double rifle shoots at Cal's!!!

Brett, i looked at my notes on the 4-bore loads you shot.

The 40gn Blue Dot/1500gn round ball load was 710fps for 1680ft-lbs. A great plinking load.

The 8dm FFg/2000gn conical was 945fps for just under 4000ft-lbs.

The 70gn Blue Dot/2000gn conical was 1070fps for just over 5000lbs.

And the 85gn Blue Dot/1500 ball was 1365fps for just over 6k.

The 8dm BP load has much more recoil/blast in my opinion than the 85gn nitro load that gives 50% more power.

The 8 loads were a 840gn ball at 1516fps for around 4200ftlbs, and 1200gn conicals at ~1200fps for a bit under 4k. I haven't chronoed the 10 loads yet, but Tolley reported 1300fps for a 5-dram gun, so I assume that's what it regulates at.

AKshooter, we'll put the word out next time and get more of us together!

I can make it. I'll even bring that piece of shit Remington double that shoots under 1 inch with both barrels at 50 yards. Provided you can get past 1/4 inch of creep in the triggersSmiler

A trigger with 1/4" of creep is good training on a double...you never know when it's going to go off, so you don't develop a flinch. It's like a back-tension release in archery. You should let the others shoot it and charge them for training time !!!!!!!

Sorry I missed the shoot but I was out of state selling my .600 book and now have taken teaching job to the end of the school year in May. In the spring we'll all get together at my place for some shooting fun, have a bbq or lunch at Sheep Creek Lodge. My new 4-double is a trip to shoot. It is a real chiropractic adjustment--not to take any business from DC Brett!
Cheers,
Cal
