BiebsJust got mine Wednesday. Took it out yesterday for one of my simulated safari outings in the woods. I run around with the quad stapling paper plates to different stumps and dead trees, then grab the rifle and a box or 2 of ammo, and start my hunt. Lots of fun...short and long shots, snap shots, shoot/reload/shoot exercises. Fits well and is quite comfortable at the weight/caliber ratio. I'll take some pix today and forward to the webmaster JudgeG to post with his. Maybe today I'll shoot for groups at my range and see how it is regulated. It seemed to hit where aimed yesterday with both barrels, so we'll just be checking.

So here is a "guy" that gets a NEW double rifle, and the FIRST time he fires it, he is running around in the woods shooting paper plates...
WHAT NO LOAD DEVELOPMENT, NO SHOOT OFF THE BENCH REST...

Well THAT, is exactly what a double rifle shooter, with a new double rifle should do...
Shoot the rifle "in the field" a little bit first...

BiebsTony, I saw the test target, and it is regulated with the Hornady 480gr load, so I wasn't worried about load development or regulation. I was interested in seeing where it hit with my own particular sight picture. Some sights are set up so the intended POI sits on top of the front bead (or post), and others where it hits the spot covered by the bead. Just wanted to see what it was like in real hunting conditions, to see if I needed to get the metal file out. All worked well, going to cut the notch just a hair on the rear sight.

I was not being critical of your first shooting session with your new double rifle...
I think that is the way it should be done...

That is the way I do it.

BiebsYes, I saw you agreed with the general "get out there and try it" protocol. Plus, it sure beats benchwork!!!

For sure...

I have not seen any benches in the field when hunting with my doubles in Texas, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Canada or Zimbabwe...

bigdoggy700Biebs, have you tried out any of the 577 nitro ammo you got from me??
06 February 2010, 18:09
BiebsNo, not yet. Still searching for the gun to shoot it in. I'll play with the Searcy until I take it to Africa in early March for Jumbo, then figure out a long-term DR strategy when I get back. I just handled an original WJ Jeffery 8 Bore hammer gun at Griffin & Howe yesterday....now I'm all confused. What a rifle!!!!!!

You all know about the bracelet, Zimbabwe December 2008.
The knife is a Ferguson Damascus. Based on an original 200+ year old Spanish fighting knife design in the maker's collection. He does nice work.
Butch gave me their regulation load for the 470 NE. 106gr of IMR 4831, Fed 215 primer, and Woodleighs.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.
