Gentlemen,

This is a suggestion/reminder that before purchasing a double rifle, it is a very good idea to have the double evaluated by a DR expert gunsmith. There are too many potential flaws in a used double that cannot be detected by an amateur, or even by the current owner.

Example of a DR transaction gone bad:

Perhaps we should post a list of Gunsmiths that are capable of checking/repairing a double rifle?

JJ Perodeau, Champlin Firearms, Enid, OK.

I tend to agree, but what does this cost? I confess to buying a (modern) double without it being inspected by an "expert", but I did buy it from a reputable dealer. Still, the comment is a "must have" when buying a "traditional" (old) double, and even more so in a private sale.

I would think an hour's rate of published shop rates would be a fair price to expect to pay for evaluation. If there's a problem, these guys will suspect or know it in much less than an hour.

Plus any shipping to and from the dealer.

I have a double coming and had JJ evaluate it before finalizing the purchase. On an old gun, there's no telling what will come up, so I relied on the wise counsel of Rusty and 400 NE to have the gun sent to Champlins. Cabelas agreed and we worked out a repair allowance. This would not have worked on the typical '3 day approval' plan of most sales, so I have to credit Cabelas for their flexibility. Bob

I learned the hard way. Pass on any used double gun or rifle where the seller will not let a competent gunsmith perform a pre sale inspection. James Flynn is well qualified to do this sort of inspection as well as repairs/restoration.

I'll pick it up at DSC this week. Rusty put me on it, and I was able to move quickly. I quickly realized it would disappear if I didn't get to it asap. bob

Still smiling. Just got done cleaning the bores for the first time. I was very lucky to have Rusty and 400 NE advising me on a first purchase. I had a great experience working with Cabelas on this purchase. We agreed on an inspection and a repair allowance with JJ. It took 5 weeks, but money and time well spent. In retrospect, I am very dubious of the usual 3 day inspection period on a purchase of an old double, at today's prices. Get some good mentors and insist on a competent inspection. Bob
