I need to publicly thank posters Cal Pappas, Mjines, Crbutler, and Can Cola for answering my reloading questions.

A special thank you kindly to Snowwolfe for inviting a complete stranger to his home to show the me the ropes. Not many people do that know a days.

And Slider for his good dialog and science.

To Saeed for making this forum possible.

Now, I will tire the knowledge and patiences of the collective again. Should I crimp the 500 reloads? The manuels are contradictory on the issues. Hornday loaded ammo is not crimped and the manual does not say. Branes ammo is crimped and ther manual recommends a crimp. Hodgen no crimp directed.

Would you crimp or not crimp? That is the question.

Thank you kindly.

I don't crimp my 450 3 1/4. But don't trust anything I tell you related to doubles. I would trust Cal. Just don't tell him I said that OK?

Cheers
Jim

I don't for double rifle. But, unlike many of the hunters of yore, i typically dont fire one barrel a lot with the same cartridge in the other barrel, which is what I understand was often the case.

Graeme Wright addresses this issue in his book. He doesn't crimp for double rifles.

Magazine rifles, well that is a horse of a different colour.

I don't crimp on my 450/400 or 450 NE. However I never reloaded or even shot a 500 NE so asked the OP to gather some opinions from those who have experience with the 500.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Mr. Slider: A crimp die may be a good answer to the question. I will have to order one as none for the 500 are available for immediate shipment.

I crimp die would be a good answer to the problem.

Does RCBS make crimp dies?

Yes you have to special order one for the 500. One thing the Lee crimp die does is it smooths up the top edge of the brass for improved feeding.

Jim--I forgot already what you posted.

Crimp: I rarely crimp any of my nitro doubles from .350 to .600: only for ammo that I travel overseas with to hunt.

I do crimp bore rifles when shooting a ball as the equator is so small it won't give adequate purchase during the recoil.

I do not crimp black powder express cartridges as the bullet shank is enough to hold in placer--same as the nitro rifles.

Soem nitro bullets to not have the crimp groove anyway--like the older Barnes.

Cal
