First target was 4 and 6 drams (110 and 165 grains). Shooting apart.

Next was 8 drams (220 grains). Still apart but closer.

Moving to 10 drams (275 grains) the target is ok. Aim point was center of target so all shots are a bit high. The first leaf is 50 yards.

12 drams (330 grains) is just right. The regulated load for this 4-bore was probably 14 drams and the 14 dram (385 grains) printed the same as the 12 dram target but I misplaced it or lost it.

16 drams or a full ounce (440 grains) was too fast and shots were crossed. Also, recoil rolled me on my back with my feet in the air! I can fit up to 20 drams in the case but there is no point.

My photographer was unable to make it but I do have video of shooting my former 4-bore Hughes. If anyone can tell me how to post video I will post them here.

I respectfully submit the only thing better than owning them is shooting them, hunting with them is better than shooting them. Thank you Mr. Cal for sharing with us. Do you plan on trying to pick a fight with a moose or bear with this 4 bore?

Doubt a moose as too much walkingin bad weather (a few years ago I took a moose with my .600 Wilkes). Bear over a stand, maybe. And, now that grizzly can be baited here in Alaska it's a strong possibility. Also, in a few days I depart for a month in Africa. I will ask an outfitter there what he thinks of the 4-bore Rodda for buffalo.
Cheers,
Cal

Me. Cal, I bet a PH would say,”Yeap, that is enough gun.” I imagine he would do so very deadpan.

On a serious note, what do you make of the old literature/accounts of elephant and buffalo needing upteen bullets from the old bore rifles to bring down, or even Harris using multiple 10 bore rounds to bring down a Sable?

My thoughts are the horse back hunting of riding in and blasting resulted in very poor shot placement, or the no one knew how to harden the bullet to ensure penetration even on lesser game like that Sable?

The only way any rifle, from a .22 to a 4-bore, that fails to put down the targeted game is poor shot placement. A dozen gut shots from the 4 won't kill immediately. From the old literature, the folks then many time just shot away. There were no laws or concequences and so much game. Ted Roosevelt shot poorly and often.

Awesome rifle, wish I could afford even a 8 bore like it !

I remember I posted the advert out of a old SCI magazine of the pair for sale many years back, loved those rifles !

If I was still in the NT, would be great to take you out for a big Bull !

From Cal's book, pages 146-149 show the twin, in THE BRITISH BORE RIFLE,
and this load data:

"Modern working load: 75 grains of Blue Dot & 1700-grain conical lead bullet @ 1200 fps."

22#7oz Rifle: 80.9 ft-lbs free recoil KE and 15.23 fps recoil velocity.
The magic of gun weight.

But wait, if 330 grains of FFg does the same velocity:
182.4 ft-lbs & 22.9 fps.
No wonder Selous developed a flinch.

Well, 1750 grains of soft lead ball is a perfect 4-bore.
Close enough!

Soft lead ball of 1400 grains is a perfect 5-bore.
Of course a hardened lead alloy ball would be lighter, to fit the bigger bore of a true 4-bore, for a working elephant load.
Close enough!
Might get the job done.
Blue Dot ought to be easier on the stock wood,
and easier on the shoulder of the peckerwood humping it around to hunt with.

Since I believe Rob will no longer be in state thus his fine array of full auto may not be present I suspect Joyce will be looking for a different distraction. Perhaps we can once again talk her into shooting the four bore. She's a 120 pounds of recoil sponge. Big Grin

Cheers

I'm in Africa until August 20th. When I return I may ask for assistance in booking May 2. I've stopoped in twice and they can't help me and my emails are unanswered.
