Gentlemen and Ladies:

The 2020 Alaska Double Rifle Shoot is on! The Birchwood range is reserved for Saturday, May 2.

A few locals, including myself will arrive at 8:30 to begin setup and the shooting begins at 10am.

Lunch break will be noon to 1, and shooting will resume to 3.

This year the range fee will $300 and I would like ask those in attendance to contribute $10 to this cost. Any overpayment will be handed to the provider of lunch for their expenses. The reason for the higher fee is Birchwood will provide a range safety officer ($100). This is due to 2019 violations of no safety glasses and/or hearing protection. Apparently we (I) did not self enforce the rules.

Over the years I notice less and less double rifles and more bolt rifle. This is fine as it’s just fun day. But I would encourage as many of you as possible to bring a double(s) to keep with the intent and spirit of the shoot.

I will have at least two newly acquired doubles: a 12-bore Rodda and a 4-bore Rodda. In addition I will bring a .500 and .577 black powder express doubles, a .450-400, .450 no2, and .600 nitro doubles, and the 12, 4, and 8-bore doubles. In addition, perhaps a .577 howdah pistol. I’m selling a number of

In keeping with the tradition, everyone is welcome to shoot whatever double(s) you wish and we don’t charge for ammunition. However, Please ask the owner before you handle and load any firearm.

If there is any interest in a “for sale” table let me know. Let’s keep it to doubles and related items for private sales.

Please RSVP to my email so I can plan attendance and food required. I recall,10 replied last year. <pappas@mtaonline.net>

Cheers, all and I’ll remind everyone in early April; again on the forum and via email for those that I have an address. Looking forward to another fun shoot with fine gentlemen.

Cal

PS. The two rooms in my home are already spoken for and reserved.

Good Evening:

I've been wanting to set up a personal shoot open to anyone who wants to participate.

What is involved in your shoot? What kind of targets, is it two days, what sort of events?

This shoot would be on private land in Northern Alberta, Canada, sometime in the summer.

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Carpediem

No politician who supports gun control should recieve armed protection paid for by those he is trying to disarm.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways-scotch in one hand-Chocolate in the other-body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WHOO-HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!"

As to what is involved, that is your call. Set it up any way you wish.

In Alaska we started shooting on the weekend at my home in Willow. After a few years, too many showed up to shoot in my front yard so we moved the shoot to a range near Anchorage.

Ours is not a competition. We shoot at a variety of targets and don't keep any scores. Everyone is free to shoot any doubles on the tables and we don't charge anything. It is more of a friendly get together and to show off our treasures.

Again, do as you wish, it's your show and best of luck to you.

Cal,
Great article in the new Africa Sportsman Magazine on your old 450-400 3"!! I picked it up at SCI. Great Show. Looking forward to the shoot... hoping this Corona virus doesn't interfere!!
We cancelled flights to/from Reno SCI, and drove down, rolled our reservation to Anchorage in May.
Look forward to seeing you and "the whole gang" at the shoot.
We arrive Friday, if there is anything I can do to assist, give me a call.
I will have a car and glad to pick up anyone in town on Saturday for the shoot.
Cheers,

Your ass is a long way away from your shoulder. Big Grin

I had a fusion L4/L5/S1 and was walking without sticks within 24hrs, on a plane within 10 days after the last stitches came out and back hunting 2 weeks after that.

I guess it all depends on how good the "mechanic" was at his job. Wink

Gentlemen of the Forum,

I have been reading Cal's write-ups on DRs for quite some time, noted how he enjoys hunting all species of game with a grand variety of them, from the smaller antelopes to the pachyderms.

My experience with a double rifle began with a 450/400 William Evans then upgraded to a 450 Rigby which after a few scares convinced me that bigger was better and frog-leaped the 470 to settle for a 500NE which was indeed the perfect choice.

I then found myself in possession of what I might call a family "heirloom" of which I knew pretty much bugger all about and despite hitting the keyboard until my fingers almost bled, couldn't find any really helpful information on its origins from the internet until I realized we had the Grand Wizard of Double Rifles right here on AR.

Cal received an unsolicited PM to which he promptly replied and dare I say that in under 2 weeks Cal bent over backwards in digging out information on a rifle whose historical background is surely not the simplest of feats and I now have the most complete of appraisals one could desire firmly in hand.

Gentlemen, the least I can do in repaying this man's dedication and undivided attention to the aficionados of double rifles is to highly recommend his services to anyone out there requiring an honest, down-to-earth appraisal of their Double Rifle.

Thank You, Cal.

Fulvio.
You are too kind. Our assocation was my pleasure and, should we meet in person, I will buy you a pizza for your kind words.

And for the rest of you gentlemen, I have been doing double rifle appraisals (only double rifles, no other firearms) for insurance and collection purposes for 15-20 years). If you need one, let me know. I've done hundreds.

Most want an appriasial for a high dollar amount and that's fine within reason. Over the years several gents have asked for very low appraisals. When I ask why, I get he same answer, "It's for the wife."
Cheers,
Cal

PS. My appraisals are done from detailed high resolution photos so there is no need to post the rifle to me. They also come with free re-write agreement: I will redo your appraisal for no charge if you get information that will change the rifle's value. Such as you find your rifle was owned by the King of England, given to Teddy Roosevelt as a gift, then passed on to Frank Sinatra when TR died, used on loan from Frank to the Beatles, then given to Janet Reno and later Hillary owned it.

Most apprsials take 1-2 weeks (I get them done in 2-3 days and then take it to a proof reader as a writer can't proof his/her own work). Each appraisal begins with a short history of the maker. Samples can be provided. Fee is $100.
