Well here it is, my first DR. Heym PH 450/400 with splinter forend, 26" barrels, and Swarovski Z6i 1-6EE scope. I ordered my rifle last March from Chris at Heym USA. I received it in November and have been waiting for the weather to turn warm so I can try it out. Chris did an excellent job and I highly recommend his services.

Isn't that a beavertail forend? I don't think I've seen a pic of the heym splinter but that looks like a beavertail to me. Nice rifle!

I don't know, now you have me wondering. Any input from our experienced members? Photos anyone?

The standard Heym fore end is what I would call semi-beavertail. They will fit a true splinter fore end to the double if you order it that way. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

So wich one do I have? | |||

Heym450/400 the fore end you have is the Heym splinter, Not a true splinter in the Britt style, but not a beaver tail either! You's looks nice! Just click on your screen name at the top left of you post here. That will take you to your personal space. in the upper right hand corner of that page you will see "VIEW/EDIT" click on that, and it will let you type in a signature line. then at the bottom of that page it will have a place to install the info you have typed in. The sig line will not apear till you cloe the browser and log back on! Simply type in DRSS and you are a member That is all there is to it. DRSS also has a new website that is tied to our home on Accurate Reloading! That's a very nice rifle. Splinter or beavertail fore end? I wouldn't care if I had something that nice in my gun cabinet. Nitehawk I think the EE means extended eye relief. It was Cris' recomendation so I went with it. The first thing I noticed was that to look thru the scope my cheek doesn't make proper contact with the stock. So the extended eye relief should help me not to get smacked every time I pull the trigger.

I asked because the scope doesn't seem to be mounted more foreward than normal. Proud DRSS member

To all Heym PH owners: I read in an German rifle magazine article that the triggers are unsually heavy. Could you confirm that or was that the exception from the rule? Many thanks!

Great rifle but you gotta get rid of that scope. On a 9,3X74 it makes sense but not on a 450/400. Save the scope for your .404 Jeffery. Dave, I must disagree. I scoped my 450/400 before my last tri to Zimbabwe. This makes a 400 double equal to any 400 bolt rifle. There are just some shots that are better taken with a scope. You cannot alwyas have you plainsgame rifle in you hands, by slipping on a scope on your 400 double, you can make the shot. Also, I cannot think of a better lion gun than a scoped double. With claw mounts you can take it off and on as the situation changes. Allows you to use and hit with your double in low light. It works pretty good for pigs in Texas as well. N E 450 No2: You make some good points but putting a scope on a double like this really nice looking Heym destroys the aesthetics and balance of the rifle. It's akin to putting a socpe on your favorite 30-30 or painting your Harley pink . Pair this beautiful double with a really nice .404 Jeffery and save the scope for the Jeffery. This is the gun that you "take over" when the game is close or things need to "get sorted out" so to speak. Dave I do not think the balance of a double rifle is destroyed any more by a scope than a bolt rifle is. The scope on a double, mounted low, still has the weight between the hands. Also I do not take a bolt rifle to Africa. My wife did on our last trip and I shot a few animals with it, but I carry a double all the time. A scoped 450/400 double is surpeior in every way to a scoped Bolt in 404 IMHO. Not everyone has to agree, but for me a scoped 450/400 is one of the best hunting rifles on the Planet. I admit a 450/400 is indeed a fine rifle, not as good as a .500/.416 but a fine rifle indeed. Dave I chose to scope this double, mostly for the future. I'm only 32 so for right now I probably won't use the scope much, but as I get older I might find myself needing it more

Great combo, scope-double, caliber not bad for your first double. If it's not going to be your only double you'll be going up or down in calibers or both. Congrats! "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"
