PORTED DOUBLES

HipshootPORTED DOUBLES
Was watching a Cape Buffelo Hunting show on either Outdoor or Sportsman channel and one of the hunters ( the guy with five names from the show Wild Boar Fever) Franz Albrect blank Blank blank was shooting .470 NE double (possibly a Shearing?)
There were holes in the top of the barrels, don't know about the sides and undersides and the rifle recoiled very little considering the caliber.
Is this a common thing that I have not seen before (haven't seen many doubles though)?

cal pappasI've seen two vintage English double rifles that were ported with slots cut just back from the muzzle.
What Jorge said above.

We could burn the heretic at a stake with Sabbatti’s as the fuel.

boom stickA person who does that to a double should be flayed alive. Better they take up golf than this sacrilege.

Brandon.GleasonI saw the same show on MyOutdoorTV. Definitely some interesting rifles. More of a rising-barrel than a falling-block design. Not my taste, but....

Russ GouldI built a 12 bore double rifle using shortish ported barrels and I rather like it. Didn't set out to do it that way but the blanks were already ported. Regulated it for Brenneke "Super Sabot" slugs that have quite a kick in a lightish weapon. Tames the recoil and muzzle flip substantially.

dpcdTo answer the OP's question without editorial comment, no it is not only not common, it is super rare. It would have to be done and regulated from the factory that way because recoil is a vital part of the regulation equation. Realizing there is no equation. It is half magic. I have done it.

HipshootIt appeared that 2 people were shooting the same rifle. Franz Albrect and the gun maker (I believe) named Schearing. Albrect is skinny and Schearing is portly. Wouldn't the handling of the recoil cause POI to be different for each shooter?

Mike McGuireThat would be the counterpart of giving the Weatherby Custom Shop a blank cheque to make a Mark V in 9.3 X 62

DCS MemberI just saw the show. They are distinctly different and beautiful doubles. They said the older guy’s gun was a .425. It was very ornate. The younger guy did have ports and caliber unknown.

That was my first thought when I saw this thread! Anything that changes the muzzle flip is bound to change the regulation unless it is done before the regulation. Hell even the addition of a very light scope on a double rifle will most times ruin the regulation till the scope is removed.
Anyone who can't take the recoil of a double rifle needs to get a lighter recoiling rifle, instead of butchering a double rifle!

Matt MooreI saw that episode as well. He was shooting a 470 NE and it was ported. His reloading was what was the most shocking. His PH needs to tell him he isn't shooting pigs before he gets in a bind and run over.
10 November 2019, 04:55
HipshootYeah I took note of that! He raised the rifle up to head high right in line with his vision. Not cool and I can't figure out why he would do that.
