A quick public thank you to Thomas Wolkmann, all of the great craftsmen and specialists at HEYM DE and also to Chris Sells and his staff at HEYM USA. The professionals at HEYM never disappoint! I greatly appreciate your assistance, professional perspective, craftsmanship, and of course attention to detail. Everything arrived safely and was exactly as I had requested in this build. Thanks again!

What did they do? If you got a new rifle, it is a rule that you have to post pictures or it didn't happen.

Sorry I have been so swamped lately I haven't had a chance to snap anything yet. Let me run over to my office real quick and snap a couple pictures while there is still some natural light left.

This started out to be a quick thank you thread but I fear it will now look more like an advertisement. :0)

Attending HEYM events in Germany and visiting the HEYM factory several times has allowed me to handle many variations of the product line that HEYM offers. A real plus is having been able to shoot them on the factory range, at event ranges in Germany, and in the field while hunting.

I decided it was time to add a HEYM double boxlock that I really like a great deal. This particular model is a HEYM best quality boxlock in .577 NE. It is known as the Special Model Mark Sullivan. The base configuration of the receiver is the Model 88-B PH boxlock.

Some of the features that I particular like are the special 1920’s Holland & Holland stock design that is very comfortable, handles fabulously, and fits me very well. It has a narrow pistol grip circumference by design, optimized overall weight (12 pounds 5 oz. in this configuration with 23 7/8” barrels). Standard features are also present such as Krupp Steel/hammer-forged barrels, triple lock-up with double lugs and greener cross-bolt, bolstered frame, articulated front trigger, automatic ejectors, and intercepting sears.

As you can see in the pics I snapped, it also has the extended top and bottom tang, special safety as designed by Mark, Silver’s recoil pad, single screw pistol grip cap, shallow “V” rear sight with gold line, and flip-up front sight.

I am not a great photographer and did not properly stage the rifle for these pictures. My apologies in advance to HEYM, I wiped it down in a rush…sorry about the lint and fingerprints everywhere.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. Thanks again to everyone at HEYM DE and HEYM USA. It means a great deal to me having this rifle built and delivered during your 150 Year Anniversary. Waidmannsheil!

Best always,
Shawn

Very nice. I would love to know how the dimensions compare to a pre-war Holland (for instance the splinter forend looks a little bigger on the Heym). To me Holland nailed the proper double rifle dimensions almost a century ago and gunmakers have been trying to needlessly reinvent the wheel ever since.

Congrats.

Thanks for the congratulatory comments. I agree with your thoughts as well Mike regarding Holland & Holland stock dimensions. That was a large part of the appeal to me on this double. Nothing for me has quite the overall fit and handling as a properly sized Holland…except this HEYM! HEYM will adjust the splinter to the length that is preferred and/or requested by the customer where possible. You can have whatever feels best to you. Mark was a part of the stock design aspect of this double and can most likely provide the dimension comparison that you might want.

I should just take the dimensions of my Holland .500/.465 and have Heym make one to those exact dimensions . . . hmmmmmm, something to think about.

These stock are also great.

Not exactly Mac, the great thing about HEYM is they will make adjustments to your rifle as you request where possible. When I flew to Germany I met with the Master Gunmaker and Sales Manager to discuss my specific needs and specifications. That also included discussion of stock and forearm preferences.

I was able to handle various double rifles and discuss what I wanted in my build. The information with each decision was logged into the factory build book. It is my understanding that the splinter can be had in a variety of lengths. As an example, 25 cm long for 26” barrels is common, some like 24 cm which is common on 24” barrels. Others like to go shorter and select 22.5 cm, etc.

I chose my stock build options by how the double felt in hand, where I like to hold the barrels with my arm length and shooting style of grasping/wrapping the barrels with my fingers. The splinter style provided on this double was built as requested. It provides a perfect fit and balance for me.

If you decide to build one they will incorporate your preferences!

I guess I should have said standard placement of the iron. I have had them build I think 5 for me now. I requested to move the iron closer to the receiver a build or two ago from Thomas and they did not want to. This was a few years ago. So on the builds I have you would be unable to shorten the forend to make it look correct as the iron would be way too far forward in the wood.

HEYM uses the services of several engravers. Often times the engravers will work together to create a variety of styles if requested. As an example, an animal scene coupled with ornamental engraving. While the engravers are all fantastic and highly skilled craftsman some are of course known for their specialty work. I have had the privilege to personally meet and speak with many of these engravers while in Germany.

The master engraver for my project was Michael Oke. Michael specializes in the design of ornamental engraving. His focus is English-Scroll. I am very pleased with his engraving where it appears on the rifle. Above are examples of his work in progress on a HEYM double.

Ed…that was one of the rifle build experiences that I also enjoyed. Examining the beautiful stock blanks that were displayed for selection at the factory. I narrowed down my selection to just two preferences. At my request, the master gunsmith then offered his input and preference based upon what he felt would be the best choice for the caliber and build. An enjoyable process! Once that was completed the stock blank went to a shelf in the stock hold at the factory awaiting the build start date.
