I liked the reference in Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary back when I was still in USAF. According to the dictionary, the word of the day was "often used with 'take' ".
Got a buddy out hot water once over the word. Some bitch of a WAF (female Air Force member) Captain overheard one of the guys use the word of the day and was going to bring the poor schlub up on charges of conduct unbecoming an NCO for public use of an obscenity. I grabbed the dictionary off the bitch's desk and showed her the notation in Webster's that the word was "usually considered vulgar". Then I turned to the entry for "vulgar" and showed her that it meant "common". Then I asked her how using a common word was at all "conduct unbecoming".
She shut the f**k up and left.

and where did this lovely word come from? The initials are short for Store High In Transit. In the old days, manure was transported in a ship's hold, below decks. Methane gas would build up, occassionally detonate, and the S.H.I.T. would spray all the way to the fantail of the vessel, hence the term of the S.H.I.T. hitting the fan. Nowadays we have synthetic fertilizers and nitrogen products and the term is now applied to the entity and not the shipping precautions!

Acronyms or calling things by what their iniitials spell started in the early 1900's. I am pretty sure that shit was shit long before then.
