Hello im going to put together a 17 HMR on a small martini action ,what is the optimum length for the barrel on a 17 hmr ?or ideal length ?thankyou for any advice | ||

t-h, Depends on how efficient you desire it to be but, whatever floats your boat; 17"-21" will do just fine. With the Martini I'd go 20" and call it quits. Cheers, Number 10 | |||

I cut my CZ 455 at 18 inches. The accuracy don't suffer, and the vel keeps up pretty well. M | |||

If it was me I would be much more concerned with getting the balance right than velocity. That said, my Ruger 77/17 has a 24" barrel on it. I never gave any thought to it lossing velocity because of the barrel length. I may have to shoot some through a chrono to see whats happening. Reguardless of the results I won't be cutting it. I concur 100%... make it portable for the field.. if you are limited to shots at 100 yds/meters or less... then about as short as is legal where ever one lives... one that mirrors the size of the Ruger Frontier would be just "peachy keen"..... | |||
