| Quite possibly it is the ammo.
This kind of problem is impossible to deduce over the internet.
Take it to your local smith and let him sort it out.

| I have had a number of 597's returned with that problem. It is often due to excessive headspace. Don't bother your local gunsmith with this, let(rather demand) Remington take care of their screw up. In their defense, 597's are usually accurate enough, though most all 17's are anyways.
