I replied to a post about powder for a .223 and remembered that I use to have a Stevens .223 with an inexpensive Bushnell scope, but I had fun loading for it and shooting it. One day a guy made me an offer on it and I sold it. I have regretted it ever since. I began thinking of other guns I have sold and I regret having sold almost all of them. I was wondering if others experience the same.

Question:
When I sell a gun I . . .

Choices:
almost always experience "seller's remorse"
sometimes experience "seller's remorse"
rarely ever experience "seller's remorse"

I had a 22 Hornet on a Martini action in the early 80's that I re worked extensively, even making an 1/4 rib for the scope and pine for it every time I think of it. Have bought - built and sold many over the years but that one along with a Mod 70 22.250 are the two only regrets.

There are only two guns I regret selling.

A Colt 1911A1 38 Super Match that was British Ordnance marked. In other words one of the batch of "Heydrich" guns.

The other was a pre-Model 57 Smith & Wesson 41 Magnum with 6" barrel and cylinder and barrel in almost a "plum" colour. Roy Jinks thinks it was one of a number of pre-production tool room job.

There are lots of guns I had that I regret not having the chance to sell them now at today's prices: Webley-Fosbery, Webley Mark 1N 455 Automatic; two original 5" S & W Model 29s...one blue and one nickel; Powell Sidelock; 280 Ross 1905 Highland Stalking Rifle; etc, etc.

But do I regret selling them other than that? No.

The only gun I would not sell is my late father's 12 bore that he had bought for him when he was 12 years old in 1919. But I sold his 20 bore!

I just went through this a couple of weeks ago. Yes I wish I had my rifle back, but Times are tough and it had to be done. That is if I wanted the rear end replaced in my truck, my only vehicle. Oh well I built that one, I can build another one just as good or better another day down the road.

I've rarely get sellers remorse. Most of the guns I've sold are the ones I had buyers remorse on. Usually an impulse buy that I hadn't thought through and later regretted. Some were firearms I bought that were cheap when I couldn't afford what I really wanted. I've learned to save for what I really want and hang on to them.

I voted rarely ever have sellers remorse! Guns are just for buying not selling! I don't sell guns; sometimes parts or scopes but not guns. I have given some away though. No remorse. If I had sold one I probably would have some remorse.

I have never suffered sellers remorse... probably because I have never seem to bring myself to sell a gun, should move a few. Just seem to accumulate. Have bought some that I didn't really need. I do miss a couple of guns that were stolen years ago, not that they couldn't be replaced but for the meaning they had to me.

I voted sometimes. There are only three that come to mind:
HK91 first generation
Colt Carbine AR15 (preban)
Ruger sp101

The only other potentials are a Glock 35 I sold to Geedubya and a Browning BLR that I saw the error of my ways on and bought it back from my brother. Yes, he made a healthy profit.

I sold my Ruger 480. I can't believe I did that. It was the most fun pistol to shoot that I ever owned.

For a short time I owned a FN FAL Belgium, like new if not new. All parts matched serial number. Never shot it - some guy offered me double what I paid for it - sold - wish I hadn't done that. But that thing was what I call a real weapon, and it was kinda scary. Looking at it, knowing what it could do, and what it was made for, cause me to realize that if I ever got in a situation where I really needed a tool like that, that some SOB would simply shoot me first, just to take it away from me.

I sold it in Hawaii for 3 times what I paid for it but for sure wish I'da never let it go in the first place.

Two guns haunt me.

My Dad bought me a Rem Model 600 in 6.5 Rem Mag. - yep the ugly one with the vent rib and 18" barrel. It was ugly - but I learned to reload with that gun and it always killed Texas deer. It was an extremely acccurate rifle. Now - I can't hear, because I used to shoot 2-3 boxes of shells without muffs, but I still wish I hadn't sold it - it's a classic - even though ugly. My folks flew me from Houston to Abilene for opening weekend of deer season in 1968. I'm 15 years old walking through Dallas Love Field during the layover with that rifle in a case slung over my shoulder. Never even got a passing glance - how things have changed.

I had a Ruger 22 Super Single Six pistol - single action with the interchangeable 22 mag cylinder. Never had it corrected with the transfer bar. Sold it for some stupid reason.

some I miss/regret.

SIG220

A wildcat custom I bought, shot a couple times but never scoped and got to it, sold it here for about 500 bucks (I tried a few months back to remember who to so I could offer to buy it back since I never heard of them post anything on shooting it) had a stunning piece of figured walnut, beautiful fine checkering.

I sold a 1917 rem action that had some sad memories for me, now I see pics of it being built into a great rifle, I miss it now. Smiler

PS
When I was a teenager, maybe 16, I sold a Ruger 10/22 I'd gotten when my grandfather died, no real sentiment attached, but I sold it for money to take a girl I foolishly thought I was in love with to a formal. Ultimately the rifle was better.

Thanks for the sympathy!!!!!!

I searched every gun show that I could attend looking for a near new Colt New Frontier 7.5" 22/22MAG and the only one that was not really used and abused was $925 almost new in box.

While I wanted one I didn't want one that bad!!! I ended up getting a Ruger New Model Single Six stainless 6.5" barrel with the both 22lr and 22Mag cylinders. I worked on the trigger and sighted it in and found that it was very very accurate. The Colt had exceptional accuracy also.

The Ruger is a close replacement in that it's single action mode, twin cylinders and a longer barrel, plus almost as accurate. It has been handy in the field and serves it's purpose very well with no complaints at all..........

But.........................it's not a Colt and doesn't feel like one!!!!!!

Stupid stupid stupid

I voted "Sometimes." I've only ever sold two guns. One was a nice little Taurus .44 Special 5-shot revolver with adjustable sights that I sold about 15 yrs ago. It was stainless, kind of pimpy-looking, and I wished I had bought blue. I didn't think it would miss it, but I regretted it almost immediately, although I have always loved the Ruger 22/45 I bought with the proceeds. I finally replaced it two years ago with a S&W 696. The other gun I've sold was an Armalite AR-10T, I have never missed it, it just never floated my boat.

Many, many guns bought and sold.....only miss (1) a Winchester '73 (38-40) with extra long barrel and factory set trigger, with which I took a nice mule deer, (2) a Winchester 1886 40-82, bought at a yard sale for $35.00. I was a student then, and sold it quickly. But that was yesterday...and yesterday's (PFFFT!) gone!!

Sob . . . to the point where I occasionally consider seppuku . . . To my horror, I've sold:

1) A very sweet Browning Hi-Power 9mm.
2) A Savage quick-to-the-shoulder 99 carbine in .303 Savage.
3) A Model 94 Winchester target rifle, with single set trigger, in .32-40.

So the answer is an unequivocal YES — I do suffer from seller's remorse and always will.

Yeah, me too. I could have had two Mod. 88 Winchesters, each with a 2.5x Weaver scope, one in .243 the other in .308 for $625 each.

What the hell was I thinking, that I didn't grab both?

That's proof that age doesn't necessarily breed wisdom . . .

25 years or so ago I traded a Model 70 Lightweight Carbine .308 in on a 70 XTR .300 Win Mag because I couldn't afford two rifles.

The .300 Mag was a real shooter. Now it sits in the safe, having eaten 20 or 30 pounds of 4350, with a burned barrel awaiting new life. But I never forgave myself for trading that little carbine off. Had to be the handiest little rifle I ever owned. You just can't find them anymore.

The other few guns I ever parted with, I did so because they sucked. No remorse.

The greatest incident of seller's remorse I've had is over selling a Browning auto-loading 22 rim-fire (the one that loaded through the stock). I think I paid something like $95 for it new and it was a great shooter. Someone offered me, what then, seemed like a good price, so I sold it. But every time someone shows me theirs, I'm just sick that I sold mine, especially when I consider the cost of one today.
