I'm trying to find a powder than I can easily reach 3600fps and over. I am shooting a 40gr v-max and have tried IMR 4198, W748, and XMR 2015. I have gotten just under 3600 fps but only with slight compresion. Is 3600fps reachable? I have a 22" barrel on my rifle. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks

2015 should be close the 3600 fps your seeking. RL7 or N133 should get you very close to 3700 in a 24" barrel. All my .224 centerfires have 24" and longer barrels.

40 Speer Spire Point Vihtavuori VV-N133 26.8 3,615
Remarks: OAL: 2.075; psi: 47,900

These loads are all from 24" and 26" barrls but I don't think a lot of loss will happen to the 22" tube

Further it does suggest that AA2460 is the best velocity getter and don't be afraid to compress the load as long as pressure signs are not evident.

thumbVD! I really am impressed at the amount of work you have done on 40 gr. bullets.Do you have more of the same quality info on heavier bullets in the same cartridge? I for one would like to have it. beerroger

What bullet weight are you interested in?

and BTW all I'm doing is copy pasteing from other sources.....I can't take credit for this research at all.....sorry if I gave the impression that it's all my data.....I don't have the pressure equipment to be able to do this.

Benchmark 28.4 grains...

Reloader 7... 25 to 26 grains...

XMR 2230.... BlC 2... will do it, but I don't shoot those powders much...

Benchmark or RL 7 are my two.. 'to go to powders" with a 40 grainer instantly...

they give me the velocity and the tack driving accuracy ya need, so why mess around...

as always, work up tho...

cheers

Most of Vapodog's loads are good safe ones from my testing, but I haven't tried all the powders. One thing though, I've been able to go above these loads with BL-C2, 748, AA2230, and AA2200. Getting 3600fps with the .223 and 40gr bullets hasn't been very difficult.
On another thought, some of my best accuracy was just under maximum.

Out of several manuals Nosler goes the highest with the benchmark powder.
I used the Nosler Manual to work up my .223 load with 40gr Nosler bullet, worked out great using the benchmark powder @ 27.8gr although never exceed in manual was 28gr but in Hot weather over 75 degrees 28gr had to much pressure in my gun, case heads would be scarred bad and primers were cratered badly but even at 27.8gr I am between 3725fps - 3760fps.

I did some high velocity experiments 3 weeks ago with a 26" barrel .223:

45 gr Rem hollow point, 17 gr Blue Dot, 3514 - 3580 fps, long brass life

33 gr Vmax 18 gr Blue Dot 4,097 - 4,127 fps, wrecks brass with the first shot

33 gr Vmax 23 gr, 24 gr, 25 gr H110, chrono can not read, long brass life

33 gr Vmax, 26 gr H110, chrono can not read, wrecks brass

55 gr Vmax, 28.6 gr H335, 3699 fps, short brass life

55 gr Vmax, 21.5 gr W296, 3580 fps, short brass life, some brass ripped off rim

55 gr Vmax, 28 gr W748, 3534 fps, long brass life

33 gr Vmax, 15 gr Blue Dot, 3550 fps, long brass life, great load, I loaded up 2,000 rounds.

Try Ramshot X-Terminator for a powder. Have reached 3800+ FPS with 40 gr Nosler BT's out of my 26" Ruger. Does 3350 easy with 50 gr TNT or SX bullets. And all with some of the best accuracy of any powder I have used. Meters great for my high volume PD loads and cost is much better than most other powders.

I can't do any better on sub-50 grain loads than the Winchester White Box 45 grainers from walmart. they are great and rated for 3600 fps if i remember correctly. I really like benchmark and 50 grain hdy spsx pills.

RL7 for speed with 40 grainers! Also try H335 - I have loads up to 27.5 grs and get good accuracy in quite a few rifles with this load.
