bushwackrBuilding a 264 win mag
I am goin to have my winchester rebarreled in 264 win mag my convern is what twist to choose
I mainly will shoot 100gr, 120gr bullets , but I want to try 130's also. I'm leaning towards a 1in9 barrel. or would I be better off with a 1in8. I was thinking the 9 because of my main bullet choices. Any thoughts?? Thanks

vapodogI'm building one right now as well.....barrel is ordered Shilen #2 contour chrome moly 1-9 twist.
Like you the 140 is the longest bullet I'll ever shoot and the 120 is mt favorite bullet in the 6.5s

30378Kriegers are what wins a majority of the big boy matches, what I carry to the field and a fine choice. Look at how you hunt. Walking, setting, a lighter weight barrel wil be appreciated. If you are a stand hunter carrying the rifle only short distances look at a 5 1/2 contour to help steady things up a bit. A 9 twist shoots 130gr Bergers just fine and should meet your needs.

LuckyduckerBeen there done that! If there is even a remote possibility you will shoot a bullet heavier than 130 grains you really should opt for the 1/8" twist barrel. I had mine built with the 1/9" and it wouldn't shoot 140 bullets into less than 2.25"-2.5" at 100 yds, but would shoot the 129 into .5".

TC1Agreed, 1-8" or 1-8.5" is the way to go. I had on built last year and went with a Kreiger #4 stainless with a 1-8" twist. It's scary accurate with Hornady 129gr SST's.

duckboatI have no problems with 140 gr. bullets in my 1-9 twist 264 WM.
I also have 6.5 Remington Mag with a 1-9 twist. Even with the lower speeds, I still have no problem with 140 gr bullets.

boom stickA lot of people think the 6.5-284 overbore...
Why chose a 264 Win Mag?
09 February 2010, 00:21
rcamugliaThe 140 gr Accubonds will not stabilize in my 9 twist .264 WM. The 140 Sierra GK's will. The Accubond is a bit longer bullet.
I think I would go 1-8 or 8.5 for twist rate....

bradking1Had a 264 built for my bro...ruger action, #4 shilen chrome moly barrel cut to 27" and minimum dimension chamber...it is an absolute death ray...1/2 moa routinely. He shoots it over his chrony and gets 3400 fps with a 140 gr pill...I know it sounds unbelievable but that's what it does with a max recommended dose of 7828SC...a really fast barrel? All the stars and moons aligned? or both? I don't know but it is definitely impressive.

Don't know your load but just for info using a 140 and 27" with 7828ssc in QL results in about 75,000psi to reach 3400.
As usual just my $.02

rcamugliaThanks ramrod...
Thought so.
When I told my 25" barreled .264 about this I could see the inferiority complex coming on.

bradking1don't know much about QL but IIRC he is using about 64.0 of 7828ssc...no primer cratering, no flat primers...absolutely nothing weird...as a matter of fact he gets about 4 reloads on each case before he has to trim them.
Like I said...unbelievable, but that's what the chrony says...I'm just as amazed.

That chronograph reading is not difficult to achieve. All you have to do is place your 1-foot screens 10 inches apart.

BohicaI have shot the 264 Win Mag pretty well consistently since 1963. I`ll stick with my 1-10 twist as it keeps the pressures down along with the rotational forces too causing less meat damage, longer barrel life etc. I don`t care about accuracy at 100 yds as, if I am using the 264 Win, I will be shooting further and the bullets will have "gone to sleep" and the accuracy will be excellent. I will pay extra for the 1-10 over anything else for a hunting rig. If I were involved in the 1000 yd matches I might go to a different twist.
