But NO rifle. I was going to get one of those Savage Model 16s a couple years back, but then they stopped chambering them in 250. So now I keep looking for one, I prefer a bolt action; but I find nothing new and never seem to make connections on private sales. So what to do?

Savage has a custom shop. For like $150 more than a catalogued chamber, Savage just might build you a 250. A few years ago, I had savage build my son a left handed youth model 11 in 204 Ruger. It is a tac driver. From savages website: "We offer a service that we refer to as the Special Order Shop. We allow our customers to mix and match different components from different models to "build" their own model. Certain combinations are not possible so you do have to call to verify whether or not we can build the rifle you're looking for. If you are looking for a specific caliber that is not listed, please contact the Special Order department at (413) 568-7001 to see if it is available." I hope this helps. Matt FISH!! I wanted a bolt action 250 as well. Found a short action rifle and had a new 25 cal barrel installed and chambered in 250. I went with a 1 in 10in twist so I could shoot heavier bullets.Very happy with it.

I also wanted a 250 Savage. Never found one I liked and didn't want to spend as much as Savage wanted for one new. Midway had 250 Savage barrels on sale a few years ago, I bought one and the barrel swapping tools. I then spent months looking for a suitable Savage to screw it into. Found a Savage 11 in 243 at Gander Mountain online for $249, a bit used but in good shape. It took all of about an hour to swap the barrel. It shoots very well. I have nothing but Good to say about the 250-3000 Savage and the 250 AI. I have the 250-3000 on a Rem. Mdl. 7 and the 250 AI on a Rem. Mdl. 700. I would not be willing to give up either one. Little to no recoil, Deer size game 300/350yards. I've heard of people taking Elk with them but then I've heard of people trying to do them with 22 Hornets. Not for me thanks. You can shoot the 250-3000 in a 250AI chamber but not the other way around. So Factory ammo will work in either. Don't rule out a 250 in a Savage Mdl. 99 Lever action. Someone talked about Savage custom for $150.00 that's not to bad for a custom. For the life of me I can't remember their name but they Produce their own Barrels and custom build rifles in Canonsburg PA. I hear they build one heck of an accurate Savage Rifle. I would place an add "looking for a good Gun Smith" and start talking to them. As to what they charge and go from there. I know you want a bolt action but a .250 in a Savage 99 makes for a very good combination. Years ago I bought a 1930's 99 takedown that has proven to be a great little rifle. Don't underestimate a 99's accuracy potential. Most hold their own with a bolt action rifle. Now I admit I am a fan of Savage 99's but there's just something special about a .250-3000 in its original package. Feel your pain. Had my eye out for a decent condition rifle in 250 Savage for a number of years. Never found one in my price range or condition that suited me. So, after coming home from the once a year Shilen open house with one of their bargain barrels in 25 cal already threaded for a mauser action...chip in its threads, why a bargain for $85 if I remember correctly. Had it chambered in 250 Savage and installed on a M96 Swede action. While not the proverbial tack driver, it shoots pretty decent groups.

Here's a Savage 14. When I ordered it the salesman asked if I meant 22-250. Then the owner called to double check that I really wanted a 250-3000. The magazines on these are all steel. If it was a Euro rifle the mags would be $150 ea.

I had an earlier 99 in 250. I believe it had a 1 in 14 inch twist. It would shoot the 87 gr bullets into a 2 to 3 inch group. 100 gr bullets were into a 5 inch group. Later rifles came with a sharper twist. 1 in 12 and I've heard some had 1 in 10. The 1 in 10 inch twist will stabalize the 120 gr bullets.

I have a short action Ruger 77 with a heavy 22" Douglas barrel that I bought in 1992 and could probably let it go, as I haven't shot it since 1995. PM me if you're interest and I'll see if I can find it.

A rather interesting 250 Savage is a Cascade Arms rifle in that caliber. These were built on a modified version of a Kimber of Oregon 84 action and were of impeccable quality. They offered various wood upgrades, checkered bolt handles and other options and were a step up from the already nice factory Kimbers. I believe the owner of Cascade, who by the way does most or all the work, was the plant manager of Kimber's Colton operations. Mine features a handsome Whitetail back engraved on the floorplate and a smooth Niedner buttplate with an engraved "CA" centrally located for Cascade Arms. My problem is I can't seem to post the photos here but I can email them to someone more successful at such... Edward Lundberg

Ray, yoiu should get what you want. Why settle for anything else? If you do a firearm search for a centerfire rifle in .250 Savage here is the result: "SORRY, NO GUNS MATCH THE SEARCH CRITERIA PROVIDED. However, we may be able to make this combination for you. Please contact us for more details." I included their link for you. .

I may be mistaken but didn't someone have a Zastava mini mauser rebarreled to 250 S. It would be a tight fit. Probably 87gr only?

Donor 700 actions can be had at Accurateshooter for sub $400, a Boyds' stock, and check out these guys for a pre-chambered sporter: raggedholebarrels.net. While raggedholes doesn't list the .250 in their inventory, you may find them open to acquiring one. Another pre-fit seller is Northland Shooters Supply. They also are open to adding reamers to meet customer requests, if they don't have something in stock. Good luck.

You can look for a Model Seven in one of the -08 cartridges and rebarrel. I used a stainless one in 243 for a donor. It is a sweet little gun.

Ray, do you mean a Ruger RL or RLS? That was their Light Rifle, or Light Rifle with Sights. That's a rarity in 250 Savage. Nice little carbines!

Biebs, Its the 77 RL, very light weight barrel, made very early in the year of the 2000s year of American Liberty and so marked, grip safety and these guns are super rare and in demand..This one is super accurate. I shoot mostly the 110 gr. accubonds in it..but it shoots about anything you shoot in it and inch or better.. Buddy of mine down in TX had one built from a Howa 1500. You can buy a barreled action from them for a build if you want a different stock. Their factory stocks have never impressed me. The barreled action should run around 300 bucks. If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Ray, there's a Ruger tang safety RSI (full-stock) in 250 Savage on Gun Broker now. It's up to $900, but looks about perfect. That would make a great little woods carbine.

Biebs, A ruger RSI for $900 is a bloody steal, Ive sold two of them used for $1300 in SS, and the other a blued one for the same price.. My Ruger is a RL I guess, its a 1976 model fwt with a .550 crown and a 22 inch barrel. Nice gun and bench rest groups. Im building a G33-40 cut in half and made Kurtz in 250-3000 or IMP, not sure yet, I have to finish my 7x57 on a G33-40 first..
