I hope others on here have had the pleasure of shooting, and working up loads for the 257 Bob. 90 gr. Sierra GKHP @ 3100 are sweet. Swift Scirocco II 100 gr @ 3050 = great. Still working on loads, but I just have to say, I haven't enjoyed another caliber as much as I enjoy the 257 Roberts.
Very little meat damage with the right bullet, and easy to shoot for anyone. No wonder it's been enjoying a healthy comeback.

I really enjoy mine too had mine about 9-10 years now. My .257 really likes 117 Sierra's and they have accounted for a whole bunch of Mule Deer Bucks and Antelope. My son has one as well and he's taken 7 whitetails with it and 100 grain Sierra's.
Very fun cartridge to play with glad you are enjoying yours too.

You forgot to include pigs and javelinas. I killed my biggest and best pig with a . 257 Roberts and several javelinas. I have used 120 grain Nosler partitions and 100 Grain Barnes triple shocks. Both are effective killers on deer sized game. With careful shot placement I would not hesitate to use it on caribou and elk.Jerry Hoover

100 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips work very well on deer, and 100 Nosler Partitions are fine for large hogs and deer if I think I need more penetration, in my Argentine Mauser .257.

Mine is loaded with 100 grn Sierra Game Kings and dee, hogs, coyotes tremble in fear when we hit the woods. I cut an inch off the stock for my daughter and grand kids and they love it as well.

I've had most all calibers at one time or another, but never a 257 Roberts. I kind of figured it was like a 243 Win without the velocity...a bit underpowered in both energy and effective range. But folks who have them sure seem to like them, and a 100gr Scirocco at 3,000 fps sounds like an effective load. I'll have to give it a try one of these days.

Unacceptable! .... We all know a 243 is only a varmint round ... At least from our resident AR 243 expert users! That 0.014" makes all the difference on deer-sized game!

Finely got 257 rob in the stable my Dad had two of them a rem722B and a Rem mountain rifle.

He gave them to a couple of the grandsons.

The 722B might of had AI chamber as the brass wouldn't fit in the 700 nor would the dies that came with it work for 700.

I had to buy a new set of dies to load for the 700.

The 722s dies and brass went with it.

After dad gave the rifles away I sat with dies and a bunch of brass.

So I had a chance to buy a 77 tang safety Ruger 257 so I did now I'll just have to load some up and shoot it.

Is my favorite for the Roberts. I get 3100 With 414 and a 100 grain Barnes triple shock.
Tight little groups too. And that's from a 20 inch barrel.

Just loaded some 100 gr Ballistic Tips last night. 44 gr IMR 4350, 2.795 oal. Hope it likes them.
Working these loads up for my Dakota Model 10. Fun little gun to shoot & carry. Topped with Ziess Conquest 3X9X40 w/rapid Z 600 reticle.
Any pet loads are certainly welcome. Probably gonna start loading IMR 4064 once I get a good 4350 load.

Hope everyones season is going well, or went well. We've got the rest of Jan. Here in Alabama.

The wife has killed lots of stuff with her Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts. Most were taken with 100 grain Barnes TSXs over Re19. Great little round and rifle. I keep thinking I need one of my own for deer and antelope, but the mightier .25-06 keeps tempting me too.

I'm a fan of the 25-06 also, and will probably start some load development after the season.

My first bolt action rifle was a Rem 722 in 257 Robts. of course it was I had been shooting the 250-3000 and 25-35 all my life so the Bob was natural progression..I shot Pronghorn Antelope, deer, and elk with it using factory 100 WW and Rem 117 gr. corelokts, It worked real well for me. I regret selling that old gun, but in your first stages of gun nutism you just must move on to bigger and better thangs and calibers.

I get that. Grass is always greener for a bit. Then we come to our senses and vow to not do that again. (until the next time)!

I got the impresion from your post that the Roberts lacks velocity when compared to the .243
But with 100 grain bullets its a little faster.
And even the plus p loads are at a lower preasure than the .243.
I like both but the Roberts is bigger both in bullet ans case volume !...tj3006

The Roberts walks on the heels of the .270 and without the blast nor the recoil..A 120 gr. Nosler or 115 gr. accubond bullet at 2800 to near 2900 FPS is a borderline elk rifle. lots of Wyoming ranchers I know swear by the Roberts for their yearly elk and even moose..The 243 can't even come close.

The pre 64 mod 70 had a long throat and you could swap out the magazine box with an 06 box and seat bullets way out, and mayb even open the throat a bit, and it was virtually a 25-06 balistically..The 257 Robts Ackley IMP would give one an honest 300 FPS more velocity..Lots of options with that old girl, all good..

Ray: I guess I'm the picker of nits today. But Nosler's Accubond is 110gr, not 115. And FWIW, my p64 257 has a very short throat. But I still get 2990fps with a 120gr Nosler. (24" bbl).

Have no chronograph, so fps info to provide. But, do own four 257R rifles....three built on military actions and a Ruger Hawkeye. So.....YEP, I like the cartridge.

In the 1970s and 1980s I killed a boatload of groundhog's with my '93 Mauser loaded with 75 grain Sierras over IMR-4064. My Remington Classic and my custom AI version like 100 and 117-120 Sierras over 4350. I have developed one good load using the 100 grainers and 4831, but 4350 seems to have less dramatic difference between its good groups and the not so good groups.

I had the privilege of taking an Eagle Scout hunting this year (*His first hunt ever!).

A Fallow deer walked out at 70 yards (*free range, free vermin on the ranch I hunt!). One great shot later that Fallow kicked a couple times and was done.

Rifle used? My Remington M7MS in .257 Roberts. The load? 117 Hornady IL over 43.0 of H4350.

The Bob is nothing more...and nothing less than an absolutely fantastic medium game round.

your correct, glad you keep me on the straight and narrow! I do recall having to open the throat on that mod. 70 to match the replace 06 length magazine.
